Have Some Affordable Fun on a Discount Family Vacation

With the economy in the toilet, people are understandably looking for all kinds of ways to save money. One idea that many magazines and websites are touting is the so-called "staycation". This essentially means that instead of going on real trips somewhere, families stay home and do things such ride local bike trails, go to any national parks in the areas, spend the day at the zoo, etc. I guess I can see why some people would feel the need to limit themselves in this way, but all these ideas just sound like a regular weekend to me. There's nothing special about them! I would rather save up for a few extra weeks and then go on a discount family vacation.

It doesn't take a lot of effort to line up great activities for a discount family vacation, and with some smart planning, I can fit everything in and still stay well within our budget. Sure, we might not be able to hop on a plane and fly halfway across the country for a week at Disney World, but I'm convinced we can have a great time for less than $100 per day.

The key to creating a fun yet affordable discount family vacation is to plan activities that everyone can enjoy. So this means skipping the detour to the World's Largest Ball of String, Biggest Corncob Pipe, or anything else that is likely to elicit nothing more than an eye roll from the kids. On the other hand, theme parks are great for us, and fortunately we have a couple different Six Flags options within reasonable driving distance. These places often have buy-one-get-one-free ticket offers during the summer months, making them a perfect destination for a discount family vacation. Interactive museums are also terrific for the kids, as are water parks, beaches, famous landmarks, and anyplace else that they can run wild and have a blast.

Of course, a trip doesn't really feel like a trip unless there's an overnight stay involved. While paying for accommodations certainly cuts into the budget, hotels and motels aren't entirely out of the question. We won't be staying at the Hilton, but we definitely can work a Red Roof Inn or Motel 6 into our discount family vacation. Plus, we can stretch our lodging dollars even farther by alternating between motels and campgrounds as we make our way towards our destination. I know the kids would love that!

To me, getting away from it all is even more important in times like this, when everything else looks so bleak. I'm sick and tired of the constant worrying about job security and the nation's financial health, and think that a few days of relaxation and fun will make a world of difference in our lives. By the time I'm done putting together our discount family vacation, we'll have an amazing itinerary of interesting activities lined up -- and we won't go broke in the process!
