Europe Facts

Over the past five decades, it's largely understood that while the world has gotten "smaller" thanks to mass communication, America itself has become more insular in terms of our understanding of the outside world. Perhaps it has something to do with the overwhelming diversity of pasttimes now at our fingertips, or perhaps it has something to do with the failure of the public school system.

Either way, we know less about the world than we used to. So here are some Europe facts, in an attempt to educate us about the cradle of the western world and the culture that had the largest influence on American civilization:

Europe is the second smallest continent. It is about four million square miles, and only Australia is smaller. To the west Europe is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. To the south it's bordered by the Mediterranean Sea and the Middle East. To the East, Europe's border is traditionally considered to be the Ural Mountains, a range that stretches from the Arctic Circle in the north to the Caspian Sea in the South. The Urals are the dividing line between Eruope and Asia, the world's largest and most populous continent. Some geographers actually consider Europe and Asia to be one contiguous landmass, and call it "Eurasia." One of the Europe facts often overlooked is that one.

The smallest country in the world in terms of population is Vatican City, which is located in Europe. The largest is Russia. Less than ten percent of Russia's landmass is located in Europe, while the remaining ninety percent is located in Asia.

Many countries in Europe have recently formed the European Union, a collection of countries that's not quite a commonwealth at the moment. Their common currency is the Euro, which has a higher value currently than the American dollar, however not all EU countries use the Euro. The United Kingdom, for example, still uses the pound while Denmark still uses the Krone.

Western Europe boasts some of the highest population density on the planet, though Eastern China and central India are quickly catching up. Some of the largest cities in Europe are Paris, London, Berlin, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Milan and Amsterdam.

Currently Europe is the third most populous continent behind Asia and Africa. However, European birth rates are stagnant, so there is a good chance either north or south america can catch up to Europe's population within the next fifty years.

Europe facts are not too hard to come by. A quick google search will find you more than you can possibly memorize in one sitting.
