Dubai's population has doubled since the mid-90s, which in large part is because of, and in large part accounts for, the rapid expansion of the tourism industry. Unskilled laborors have been imported from places such as Africa, the sub-continent and southeast Asia, while some of the finest achitechts and engineers have been hired from around the world to work on all the new hotels. And some of them really show it, as they're basically palaces.

The real question is what will happen in twenty years when Dubai's oil reserves are expected to run out. Currently oil and gas account for only six percent of Dubai's gross domestic product, this after decades of being the primary source of the emirate's wealth. That vacuum has been filled by the real estate and construction sectors, but as we've seen with the economic fallout here in the united states - specifically in New York City and southern California - those two sectors can only boom for so long. Eventually you run out of real estate, run out of new things to build, and bubble goes bust.
