Denarau Island

I'd never heard of Denarau Island until recently. A friend of mine mentioned it as a great vacation destination, deep in the south pacific, so I looked it up online and found out that it pretty much looks like paradise.

Denarau Island is in Fiji, and it's basically a resort retreat that caters to people from all over the world. Many, many top-of-the-line chain hotels have set up shop there to grab a piece of the pie, but there are also more moderately priced hotels as well as independent bed-and-breakfast type places for the adventuresome traveler.

Denarau Island isn't actually an island; it's a peninsula jutting off the western coast of Vita Levu, Fiji's main island. It is what's called an "integrated resort," meaning that it's basically a gated community for travelers and part-time residents from other countries who have the money to afford a second - or third, or fourth, or fifth - house on the island. It's the largest integrated resort of that kind in the south pacific, and it doubles as a pretty tempting investment opportunity if you're one of the lucky one percent with that kind of cash to throw around.

They call it an "island" because a canal has recently been dug that actually does completely separate Denarau Island from Vita Levu, much like the Cape Cod Canal in the states. (Cape Cod is actually an island now, since it isn't offically attached to mainland America and hasn't been since the 1930s.)

What's remarkable about Denarau Island is that the hotel rates are insanely affordable. You can find accommodation in a four star hotel for $85-$150 a night, something unheard of in the states. Of course, that doesn't really factor in the cost of getting there - flights run in the thousands of dollars, and it's a loooong flight from the United States.

Still, it's an exotic location that's unique in the way it's presented. Most find that Denarau Island is ideal for, as they put it, "relaxin' and chillin' out." Many online reviews stress that it's absolutely the best place in the world to get away from it all, it's isolated and tropical and you can just lay on the beach for hours and hours soaking in the sun.

The bad part is that there's really not much to do beyond that, according to most reviews. Because it's still in the building stage, Denarau Island still hasn't found its real identity outside of just a collection of hotels for sun-starved travelers. As the years go on it will likely become more of a Bali-type of destination, with splashes of culture and nightlife to be found nowhere else in the world.
