Buying Laptops on eBay

Like most people, I love buying electronic gadgets. I'm always on the lookout for better toys, so whenever a newer, sleeker, sexier model comes along, I ditch my old device for the upgrade. I tend to do this for everything cell phones to iPods to computers. Basically, if I can afford a newer version, then I want it.

Notice that I said "newer" version rather than "newest". That's because over the years I've learned that I can best keep up my gadget habit by staying one generation behind the current model. As soon as the third generation of some product comes out, all second generation versions suddenly become much more affordable. This is especially true when shopping for laptops on eBay.

Most people probably view a laptop as something of a long-term purchase. They almost always envision keeping it for three or four years or more, and make sure they buy the extended warranty. But I'm not like that at all. Thanks to the wide availability of both new and used laptops on eBay, I don't have to become totally invested in a single machine anymore. This is particularly important for me because of the way I use my computer. I'm into video games, photo editing, and movie making, three activities that require a top-of-the-line machine. Since I'm not exactly rolling in cash, I've taken to buying laptops on eBay because they're so much cheaper there than in stores.

Some folks might be hesitant to purchase laptops on eBay, which is understandable. After all, it's a bit scary the first time you buy a big-ticket item from a regular person instead of a store. You tend to wonder if the transaction will go off without a hitch, and whether or not the computer will make it to your door in one piece -- or at all. But as long as you perform a bit of due diligence before transferring any money to the would-be seller, you should be ok.

What kind of due diligence is necessary? Just the basics, really. For instance, you should take a look at the seller's feedback score to see what kind of problems -- if any -- he has had in the past. If someone has too many negative ratings, there's no point in taking a risk on that seller when there are so many others available. Another thing to look for is the seller's responsiveness to communication. Does he return emails in a timely manner? If you can't get through to him before the auction ends, there's no reason to assume that will change once you win the item. And finally, make absolutely sure that the item you're bidding on is the one you want. There are lots of laptops on eBay that have somewhat deceptive descriptions attached to them. Read the fine print and make sure this is the model you want before you submit a bid.

Overall, buying new or used laptops on eBay can save you a tremendous amount of money versus getting the same products from a big box electronics store. Taking this route does require a bit of extra caution, though, so be sure to do your homework before dealing with anyone on an auction site!
