Your Strategy in Searching for a Job Today

When a friend of mine, an out-of-the-box thinker, needed to set about searching for a job because he wasn't satisfied with what he had at the start-up he worked for, he didn't just go sign up at Monster and CareerBuilder and wait for the world to beat a path his door. Instead, he created a brochure for himself. It was not a flashy brochure either. He just wrote about why he was putting himself on the job market, what he was good at and the kind of job he believed he'd be able to ace. There was a link in there to his LinkedIn profile and his online resume and his website. In short, he marketed himself.

He sent this to everyone in the industry that he could think of. Anyone slogging away the jobs board searching for job would be blown away by the kind of response he got.

You're probably telling yourself that the response he got was in large part due to the fact that he had lots of contacts to send that brochure to. Well, that's the other thing he did hed been going to interviews forever even when he had a job. These weren't interviews that he went on to look for job. He was just building his contacts list in the industry. He was networking. That's why his brochure actually worked.

The thing is, if you're searching for a job today, you can't just pretend like the job market is likely to behave the same in 2012 as in the year 2000. The IT industry is not desperate for talent. You on the other hand, are desperate for employment. You need to almost make a part-time job of building up your contacts list. That's where you get jobs these days. Not at the jobs boards, not at the companies where the hiring managers are looking at 250 applications for every opening they have. You need an inside track.

Basically, you need to always be searching for a job even if you're not. You need to always be on LinkedIn trying to find ways to network. Because hiring managers these days say that they get their best hires from contacts and referrals. At least nine out of ten hiring managers say that they've hired directly from LinkedIn. That's where you need to focus your efforts.

Connecting with a good staffing firm can really work, too. A lot of these companies get you great opportunities with companies that take you on a project-by-project basis. If they're happy with you on a project that lasts a year, they'll consider retaining you as a full-time employee.

Basically, the jobs boards are over and done with. If there's one thing these are useful for, it's to be able to get a look at who's hiring. But that's about it.
