Why Does It Cost so Much More to Buy Colored

Why Does It Cost so Much More to Buy Colored Contacts?

Now when you go in to buy colored contacts, you expect to pay something more than you would for regular lenses because these are cosmetic items. You believe the manufacturers know that they can get away with asking for more. But really, should they cost more?

Actually, colored contact lenses run the gamut in the prices they go for. But basically, compared to regular contact lenses of similar description, colored ones cost about 75% more. Acuvue for instance sells colored contact lenses for $30 a box; the same company sells regular contacts at $20 a box. So why should you pay more to buy colored contacts? Is there anything that high-tech that goes into them that they should charge this much more?

Of course, manufacturers don't just pull those prices out of a hat. There are a few defensible reasons why they should charge more. To begin with, they do have to invest extra in the design of colored contacts. The lenses do have to look realistic, deep and beautiful. Artistry costs money.

And then, there's the matter of economy of scale. While they do need special equipment to manufacture colored lenses, those costs wouldn't actually translate to prices that were 50% or 75% higher on their own. Not if they could sell colored lenses to as many people as regular lenses. The truth is that the market for colored lenses is really tiny. So when fewer customers pay for those research and equipment costs, those prices go up per customer.

The prices don't tend to be that high when you just buy colored contacts for simple vision correction. Buy specialized colored corrective lenses for astigmatism for instance, and the price difference goes up 300% or more.

It might feel comforting to believe that it's just the manufacturers trying to take advantage of you where they can because they figure that people willing to spend money on frivolous stuff like colored contacts would not mind paying a little extra money. But that's not how it is at all. If they charge you more, it's for a good reason.

If you really want to look for unreasonable pricing, you'll probably want to look at special effects lenses or custom design lenses. These can run into the hundreds of dollars. Typically, these aren't used by regular people for regular purposes. Movie producers buy them for their special movie roles and people buy them for Halloween.

Basically, when you buy colored contacts, do remember that they are supposed to be medical devices. Anything that goes into your eyes needs to be dealt with, with extra care.
