Getting around Childhood Insomnia

Insomnia is common enough in grown people. But we use babies as the very images of peaceful and undisturbed sleep as in "I slept like a baby". Does insomnia have to affect children too? Unfortunately, even if it's somewhat uncommon, childhood insomnia does exist, and it's a real problem.

The good news with childhood insomnia is that it isn't anything like the problem you see in grown-ups it isn't as difficult at all to help. All you need to do is to understand what exactly causes the insomnia r and you need to make the right kinds of changes.

This may be a little surprising to hear, but children need proper, well-established routine to their lives. When they don't have this when a child's parents tend to be quite liberal with when the mealtimes are or when bedtime is, or when how much TV time is allowed, children can easily lose their way. When a child doesn't have a routine for when she can expect to go to bed, her mind just refuses to figure out how to fall asleep when you put her to bed. Basically, this kind of childhood insomnia is not exactly insomnia it's just a matter of timing.

It might be easy enough to cure insomnia that arises for this kind of reason. You just need to help establish some routine in the child's life. There may be other things that may be just as simple, that conspire to keep your kid awak.

For instance, while youve certainly noticed that small children can practically fall asleep standing up, no matter where they are, some children can be very particular about sleeping in their own bed. Some children just like the security and the permanence that going to bed in their own space offers them. So if you try to get them to sleep elsewhere, you'll suddenly run up against a kind of childhood insomnia.

A good way to take care of this kind of problem would be to offer your child another kind of security tucking her into bed, or sitting next to her and reading her a story or something. If your child is just afraid of the dark or a bad dream or something, leaving the hallway light turned on can easily solve the problem.

It could be a good idea when you're running up against this kind of problem, to take a look at your child's diet. If your child has too much sugary stuff or caffeinated stuff like cola shortly before bedtime, that could be a problem. Even cocoa has caffeine.

And finally, you don't want to overlook how most unidentifiable sleep problems can just be sorted out with nothing more than a lot of love and attention.
