When was the Last Time you Used a Phone to

When was the Last Time you Used a Phone to Call Phone Numbers?

It can be hard to really see it when you walk around all day with something that's primarily designed for voice transmission, but nobody uses their phone to call anymore. Nobody, except close family, whom you are used to talking with. If the phone rings for any other reason, it almost seems rude that anyone would call you. It's almost like someone just coming up to your door to visit without even arranging for it ahead of time. When did it begin to feel so alien to call phone someone just to talk to them?

Young people seem to have given up on trying to call phone numbers completely. Why, to the young, even e-mail is just too fussy what with the greetings and the signings off and polite written form. The text message hasn't just taken over phone calls. It's taken over all other forms of communication as well. When people do get phone calls, and it's not from their mothers, they usually know by now that they have to just press the Silent button so that it'll keep ringing silently and the rude person on the other end who doesn't know any better than to be calling just gets tired of it and hangs up.

Actually, it isn't just personal preference anymore. Offices that used to be all about taking calls from clients and customers and colleagues have all but fallen silent. For one thing, there's no money for assistants anymore who will handle phone calls for any manager who sits in his room unwilling to be disturbed. Anyway, no one even has a room anymore it's all a forest of cubicles. When you have a conversation on the phone, it is going to disturb people working in 10 other cubicles. If you do have to make a work-related call at the office today, you had better text or e-mail ahead to make sure you're not being rude and just calling someone out of the blue. So much for cold calling. So much for important office-goers who work banks of phones.

The phone was first introduced as a communication tool for the public, it was supposed to be something you used for important stuff from making appointments, for ordering stuff from the store, for letting someone know you would be home late. People right away began using the phone for idle chitchat; and the phone companies were outraged. They didn't make any money out of this and they thought social phone calling was kind of misusing the network.

It would seem that the phone companies have their wish today. Nobody wants to call phone numbers anymore; air minute sales have been in a nosedive for quite a while now.
