You just need to Google for such a service, pay $10 for an hour of spoofing and then pretend to be calling from just any phone number your little heart desires. How exactly will that get you into other peoples voicemail services and their bank accounts, you ask?

Well, that's a service that the friendly folks at major banks like Bank of America and Chase and major phone services have for you. If they receive a call from the phone numbers they have on their records, they think that it's the account holder calling and they offer just about every scrap of information it's possible for anyone to want. They can tell the caller about what motel a charge was made at, what adult video store a product was purchased at and so on. And as for voicemail, unless it's Verizon, no one has to actually set a password. With most major cell phone carriers, they just use caller ID to see what number a call is coming from and they just offer up access to voicemail associated with that number. That's what caller ID spoofing does, if you haven't guessed so far no matter what number you're calling from, if you use such a service, you can easily convince any phone receiving the call that you're calling from another number anything you set.

Of course the government could make such services illegal. But they don't, because there are some instances where this would be actually useful and appropriate. For instance, if a wife is fleeing an abusive husband and she just wants to call home to talk to her child or something, she wouldn't want to give away where she was calling from. She would want to put in some fictitious number so that she couldn't be traced. The Truth in Caller ID Act tries to bring a measure of sanity to all this by saying that no one should use caller ID spoofing for illegal purposes. But when has that ever stopped anyone?

Thieves just like to call old people and use their caller ID spoofing for the banks number to appear on the receivers caller ID. And then, they just ask for credit card numbers and so on. Old people, thinking that it's just the bank calling, will offer anything that's asked for. They can even call some banks pretending to be other people's telephones and get credit card numbers and everything.

Should caller ID spoofing services be banned? That's the same thing as asking that guns should be banned.
