Christmas mantel decorations that make that room sparkle!

Decorating our homes for the Christmas season can almost become an event all on its own. If you're like me, this decorating begins the day after Thanksgiving! After all, there's no reason to wait. While waiting about a week before going out to shop for the tree helps assure a still-fresh tree come Christmas Day, areas like the fireplace are just begging you to create your Christmas mantel decorations for this season's festivities some old, some new. Instead of sticking with the same Christmas mantel decoration scheme, year after year, it's fun to mix it up a little, providing everyone with a beautiful view as friends and family gather to chat and enjoy some holiday goodies. Here, we've got a few ideas for Christmas mantel decorations to jump-start your imagination.

A table runner, some sparkling tree skirt fabric or a metallic fabric, cut just a foot longer than the mantel on each side, makes a good start. This sets the stage, so to speak, for any and all other holiday decorations then placed atop the mantel. Consider the colors and materials of your other mantel piece decorations to form a cohesive scheme.

For example, you might place graduated sizes of candles at each end of the mantel. To create a glitzy scheme, a metallic table runner fabric might be nicely offset with solid color candles, lightly dusted with glitter. When the candles are lit, that sparkle creates a magical ambience that kids especially enjoy.

If you have a set of Nativity scene figurines, here's a neat trick that draws attention to the Holy family: set a mirror underneath the figures, which helps reflect each figure's colors and highlights the appearance, adding a bit more sparkle to your Christmas mantel decorations.

Use yarn, ribbon or a heavy metallic thread to hang ornaments, garlands, or Christmas cards from the ceiling above your mantel for a nice display of the season's cheer. A string of lights can be taped along the edge of the mantelpiece. A Christmas wreath hung above the mantel, with an angel or star as the primary ornament, also looks lovely. Try a few pine cones on that wreath, with small satin ribbons glued on to each cone.

With a fire blazing brightly, you'll of course want to keep in mind a few precautions to be sure the fire stays where it's supposed to be! The typical fireplace mantel stands well above the burning area, which makes it fairly easy to stay safe. Don't hang garlands, stockings, or any flammable material in reach of a snapping, crackling ember. Also ensure that kids, hoping to perhaps catch a glimpse of Santa, are well supervised and, preferably, tucked snugly in their beds.

Now you've got the scoop on adding there can hardly be too much Christmas spirit to your home with some ingenious Christmas mantel decorations of your own!
