In the Cloth Diapers vs Disposable Debate, Cloth Wins Hands

In the Cloth Diapers vs Disposable Debate, Cloth Wins Hands Down, Right?

Disposable diapers are so dug in nice and proper that you don't even have to say "disposable" at the store anymore when that's what you're asking for. You just have to ask for "diapers', and that's what you get. So disposable diapers are terrible for the environment and you have to use cloth diapers, right? Well, if the cloth diapers vs disposable debate was that simple, the problem wouldn't have taken this long to resolve.

According to a long-term study done by an environmental agency in Britain, it doesn't make any difference at all to the environment, which you choose. While disposable diapers are full of non-biodegradable materials that are bad for the environment, the use of cloth diapers is equally bad because you use soap to wash them every time, and that's poisonous to the environment too. So which side are you supposed to take in the cloth diapers vs disposable debate?

It's certainly clear which way the country is headed. Diaper services around America are going into bankruptcy there is very little demand for their services. Disposable diapers that are already used by nine out of ten parents may be heading for complete ownership of the market very soon. That's 20 billion diapers in our landfills every year. What a number!

So couldn't you neatly sidestep the whole cloth diapers vs disposable debate and buy a biodegradable brand like Nature Boy and Girl? Well, here's the thing: the term biodegradable is a relative one. For instance, how biodegradable is a potato or an onion?

Well, these vegetables that when left out in the open will easily rot away to nothingness in a few days or a few weeks, when placed inside a tightly-packed landfill where there is no air, can actually last for an entire century. They won't be edible anymore, but they certainly won't have broken down. If that's what happens to a vegetable, you might well imagine how "biodegradable" a diaper is.

But how can cloth diapers be environmentally harmful? Well, to begin with, cotton is a terribly destructive crop that requires a great deal of pesticide. About 25% of all the pesticides used in the world are used on cotton crops. And then, cotton plants need way too much water. When you actually use those diapers, washing and drying them takes a lot of water and energy, too.

Unfortunately, there is no easy answer here. You simply have to do whatever seems right to you.
