Tune in to children: talking to children as a child

Tune in to children: talking to children as a child at heart, lets you enjoy the magic too!

Do you remember, as a child, having conversations with your parents or other adults, feeling that they really weren't paying attention or understanding what you were talking about? It wasn't that they didn't want to spend time with you or hear your thoughts only that they didn't comprehend a child's point of view and that you understood more than they realized.

For example, you'd be telling that grownup about a big, beautiful butterfly you saw, sitting on a branch, with the sun making the wings transparent. Now, you might not have had the vocabulary to adequately convey how you felt about this experience, but, to you, it was magical. Did that grownup get into the magic with you? Probably some did, some didn't.

Now that you're all grown up, with children of your own, try to remember that phase in your own life. Talking to children is an art. All that's required is that you become a child again and read between the lines. Here we've got a few pointers on talking to children in a way that lets you into their world, capturing that moment forever. Remember, time has a different meaning for children. Children live life in the moment, without regard for what may be ten years from now. A six-year old child cannot comprehend ten years.

1.Learn to listen carefully. A child's vocabulary may be limited, but their imaginations are not. When you're talking to children, understand that their imaginary world and the real world are often one and the same. Kids use metaphors to convey what they see. That Monarch butterfly might be analogous to the sun, a brilliant color with light showing through. The butterfly flutters, unaware of the child observing it. It's beautiful and full of magic. Hear what the child sees.

2.Be interested. You may have seen a thousand butterflies in your lifetime. Don't slough off the experience with a Oh, that's nice remark. When talking to children, they always know if you're just passing time, or if you're really there with them.

3.You can learn much by talking to children. They have the most fascinating insights, ones you may recall from your own childhood and others which may never have occurred to you. 'Out of the mouths of babes...' You'd be surprised at what you can learn.

Sure, there are times when you need to be the grown up, but at playtime, it's time to be a kid too. The rewards are great, both for you and your child. Talking to children can keep you young at heart, seeing the world as they do, with the most common place events becoming new, exciting and mysterious. Being a child in your heart is a wonderful experience.
