Should you purchase from a surplus computer store?

People hear the word "surplus" and think of value or extra money. But in other cases, if you hear the word "surplus" you might think "inferior product". After all, if you have a surplus of something, doesn't that mean you can't find someone to purchase them? And if so, doesn't that mean something is wrong with the product? Sometimes, that might be the case. However, when it comes to surplus computer offers, I think you should look a little deeper.

What is a surplus computer to a manufacturer? Well, let's take a look at the nature at the home computer industry. Computers are evolving so rapidly that by the time a company takes a prototype to a sellable model on the market, odds are that another company has another model out at the same time, with new or improved features. Back to the drawing board for both companies. The computer industry is obsessed with an "arms race" of the newest and fastest computers they can offer consumers. And they will give their products such a short shelf life so that they don't look out of date next to their competition.

That's fine and all, but odds are, when you're looking for a new computer, you don't need their newest computer. The bells and whistles are far more than what you really need. What you really need is a new computer, with a good warranty or service plan, an up-to-date operating system and maybe one or two more advances since your last computer. Guess what? That's the surplus computer you see on the wholesale web sites.

Because the nature of retailers is that they buy from the wholesaler or manufacturer and mark up the price to the consumer. They only do this if they think the consumer will pay the mark-up. If the customer doesn't want the computer, the retailer is out not just the money from the computer unpurchased, but the shipping, labor, and overhead costs. So sometimes, retailers don't pick all of the manufacturers computers. The result: the surplus computer.

The surplus computer is a brand new and perfectly acceptable alternative to paying high retail mark-ups. Unless you're in a very small segment of the population, you don't need a fancy computer, just one that works. You can definitely find this by shopping for a surplus computer. So instead of rushing off to the nearest big box store when you need a new computer, consider looking at a surplus computer web site.
