Can You Have a Sports Job?

It is the dream of so many young Americans to grow up to be professional athletes. I know that when I was a kid I wanted to be a shortstop and play baseball for my hometown team. As I got older I realized I wasn't that good at sports and that I had lots of interests in other fields. Many other people, however, don't have other interests. And the level of professional athletes is so high that even some of the very best never make it. So how can someone that is interested in sports but not a world-class athlete get a sports job?

It is possible to have a sports job. Thousands of people work behind the scenes at a sports job that very few people ever hear about. And none of those people are good enough to be professional athletes. Perhaps the most common sports job is the trainers. Because professional athletes rely so much on their physical abilities, it would makes sense that a sports job which handles the maintenance and health of these bodies would be in high demand. This particular sports job requires a fair amount of schooling in a university and is highly competitive, but is rich in benefits, as you spend a lot of time up close with the athletes and games.

Another sports job where you interact a lot with the players and managers is an agent. Being a sports agent might be the most vilified sports job out there. There is a stereotype of a sports agent as a money-hungry shark that cares about nothing else. While this might apply to some cases, it is not universally true. This sports job is designed to make sure that the agent's clients get a fair market salary for their services. If you had someone who was interested in making sure you got the right amount of money each year from your employer, you'd see how an agent is very useful.

Finally, it's easy to forget that a sports team is very much like a corporation. If there is a regular job out there, it is likely that there is a sports job that is pretty much an identical match. Sports teams need marketing and advertising personnel, accountants and lawyers, even chefs and, for collegiate sports, tutors. If you can think of a job, there's probably a sports job just like it. Unfortunately, because sports are so popular finding a good sports job can be difficult, as they are very competitive. But there is always a window open if you want it bad enough!
