The Australia great barrier reef

I had heard so much about how pollution effects the great barrier reef that I had practically expected it to be gone by the time I got there. I was 13 at the time, and my parents were avid divers. They had been reef diving several times, but they had never been to tithe great barrier reef. The great reef was sort of a mecca for them and for divers all over the world. Being the largest reef in the entire world, and being located in crystal clear, beautiful waters, made it a mecca for all kinds of tourists and travelers. My parents were unusual though. I think they cared more deeply about the Earth and its welfare than anyone else I have ever known. Going to the great barrier reaf was not only a way for them to relax and enjoy themselves, but a way to remind themselves about what they were fighting for.

You can hear over and over again how big the great barrier reef is, but you can't possibly understand it until you have actually seen it. It is huge. When you are in the middle of it, it stretches practically from horizon to horizon. But it is not the scope that is so impressive, so much as the density. Once you're diving in the reef great barrier, you are completely surrounded by life on all sides. At any given point, there can be upwards of a thousand fish and other marine critters around you. There are creatures of all different size, shape, and coloring, each with its own survival strategy. It truly makes you marvel at the wondrous variety of life and respect how much we have to lose.

Fortunately, the local government is starting to realize what a national treasure the Australia great barrier reef is. Tourism especially ecotourism is one of the main draws in Australia. When I was visiting years ago, there were signs all over of the efforts to protect the great barrier reef from future environmental damages. We saw at least three separate teams of scientists all studying the ecosystem of the great barrier reef, as well as government boats patrolling to make sure that everyone treated the reef with respect. Pollution, however, continues to affect the reef, as do motorboat. People going by too quickly can damage the delicate coral reef with the wake they churn up which, with thousands of boats going by a year, adds to a lot of damage.
