Stereo Sound

Just as working is more pleasant when you have good office furniture, listening to music is a much richer experience when you have a good stereo system. Ever since high fidelity audio was invented, as a matter of fact, audiophiles have been on a quest to find the best stereo systems. The problem is that it is so hard to figure it out sometimes.

Some audio systems are built to emphasize power. They have large speakers, complex and elaborate looking components, and a huge booming sound to them. Other times, a stereo system is meant to have a more slick, modern look. Shelf stereo systems, for example, are built around the philosophy that less is more. They use high-technology audio components to miniaturize everything, hoping that the buyer will see this as an intelligent design philosophy. So which is better? It often depends on what you want.

A lot of car stereo systems are built with power in mind. The idea is that the people listening to them are not looking for high fidelity. Typically, they listened to rap or rock and roll, and enjoy blasting the music as loud as they can. A powerful car speaker system is a status symbol for a lot of people, so the manufacturers cram in as much power into it as they can. This isn't to say that this kind of stereo system does not perform well in other respects. A lot of them do have very good definition, but often the balance is tilted heavily in favor of bass. If you are, say, a classical music fan, this is definitely not the design for you.

On the other hand, sometimes a shelf system has exactly the opposite problem. Although it will have good high frequency response, it won't have a lot of body to the sound. You'll hear every note clearly, but it won't create the force and impression of having a more powerful stereo system. In reality, you can't squeeze everything into a little package. If you don't include subwoofer speakers along with woofers and tweeters, you won't get a complete sound.

Usually, the best sound lies somewhere in between. Whether you are looking for a home theater system or just a way to listen to CDs, you want to have a balanced sound. This means that you should have several different types of speakers to pick out different frequencies. That way, you can get all the power you need without sacrificing finesse.
