What to do when your Plans for getting an Internship

What to do when your Plans for getting an Internship Fail

Recent graduates who have been dreaming of getting an internship at a well-respected firm will find that this year is a lot better than it's been in the recent past. There far more job openings available now that even one year ago. But that's only the way the private sector is. The government, broke everywhere, is busy cutting the number of internships available to young people. There certainly are tens of thousands of internships open at any time on websites like SimplyHired or Internships; the problem though is that the competition can be so tough that you should probably have a game plan for what to do if an internship is denied to you.

Why is the competition to getting an internship so tough, you may ask. Are there more graduates coming out of college today than ever before? Well, not exactly. The only problem is that there are so many unemployed young people now who haven't managed to land a job in years. They keep trying for all those internships too. And then there are older workers who've been laid off who are trying for a fresh start in another industry. Put all of this together, and you see that you're up against a very tough field. Should things not work out with your application to be accepted to an internship, here are your alternatives.

Have you considered setting up your own internship rather than working at getting an internship ready-made? No, you're not supposed to make your own company and then call yourself an intern in it. How about picking a company you like and then writing to them asking if they could create an internship position for you even if they don't have internship program advertised at the moment? This isn't as crazy as it sounds. Most internships, even if they do exist, are not advertised. If they don't even have an internship program, you could study the company, find a way to contribute, and approach them with your idea.

A big mistake that young graduates make in their efforts at getting an internship is that they aim for the biggest and the best companies in their field to apply to. If they have a training in financial journalism, they have to go and apply with the Wall Street Journal for an internship. You could aim a tad lower with a place like MSN Money, or lower still, with WiseBread.

Fresh graduates keep applying to these internships as if getting them would be a dream come true. Most internships though are terribly tedious and boring. Even getting an internship at a big-name company doesn't really mean anything more usually than being a research assistant or a gopher. You could intern in a meaningful way by contacting companies and asking them for a freelance internship where you do specific things for them. This could give you a spectacular range of experience.
