Holiday Specials

From long experience shopping for the holidays, you know that checking the impulse to just rush out there and do all your shopping as soon as possible is the smartest way to go about it. You know that you should wait for the holiday specials and the other discounts that show up towards the end of the season. Well, that may have been a rule thats worked up until now, but those holiday specials could be pretty hard to come by this year.

In fact, if you put your Christmas shopping off until 15 December or so, you're actually running a risk of missing lots of great deals. And it isn't just your typical clothes and electronic stuff, either. If youre waiting for those year-end cash back offers and car sales, you'll find that it's slim pickings out there this year. There are very few offers on the table.

And let's not even get started about airline ticket sales.

The thing is, the retail industry seems to have learned a lesson or two from the airline industry. About six years ago, the airline industry was in the doldrums. They had all these airplanes and flights that they needed to fill up and prices were pretty low.

They decided to just sell off all those planes or send them to an airplane graveyard, and to just run their business with a few services to every destination everyday. The result was what you see now every plane is full to bursting, and ticket prices are always high.

The retailers are doing the same thing. Theyve learned from previous experience that ordering too much ahead of Christmas is a bad idea. Instead, they're just keeping inventory really low and raising prices. They don't keep much in stock and they're not really anxious to make a sale.

Let's take a closer look at how those holiday specials are disappearing in electronics, cars and air tickets.

Computers are selling more quickly than ever before this year. Even so, there isn't much inventory. To begin with, the floods in Thailand have crippled much of the world's hard disk production capacity. The resulting hard disk shortages by themselves are going to add $100 to the price of any computer. On top of that, production in general is down and so is inventory. What you can do is to go for a price guarantee that stores like Best Buy and Walmart have on offer.

Even up until October, you could get about $3000 in cash back offers from Ford and Chrysler. Now, the best you can get is about $1000. Why should this be? It's natural disasters in Asia again. Production has been crippled through earthquakes and floods and other calamities and inventory is down. Car retailers see no need to cut prices, since they dont have that much to sell, anyway.

And finally, don't wait to the last minute looking for discounts on your travel purchases. Every airline is retiring its aircraft big time to save on expenses. There are fewer seats to go around.
