How to Get Fresh Produce for Less

If you go by what they tell you in the health articles, you're supposed to have nearly a half dozen servings of fresh produce everyday fruits and vegetables both. The only problem is, you dont know how to get fresh produce on your budget.

Being budget conscious at the grocery store doesn't mean you have to get cheap junk food or put up with a kitchen that's full of produce from the "expired" section of the store. Try these tips to get fresh produce on less.

If you live in your own independent house that you have your yard, growing your own produce would be an idea; but you do have to have quite the green thumb to be able to pull it off, and you need to have plenty of space. Look it up on the Internet to find what kind of produce grows best in your local neighborhood, and try to grow that. If you want the most health benefits possible from your efforts, try to grow produce in your home that when you buy from outside, tends to be most polluted. Spinach, cabbage, tomato, potato vegetables that happen to be the most thin-skinned (or to have no skin at all) happen to absorb the most fertilizer and pesticide.

Sometimes, you can get together with all your friends and neighbors in the area and divide things up among yourselves. This way, if you have too much tomato one day, you can swap them for the surplus cucumbers and peppers a friend has. It's the good old barter system that's worked since prehistory.

As popular as farmers markets are around the country, they are a dying concept. There are just not enough people out there to keep them all in business. Make sure you don't let such a great source of fresh produce in your area fade away. When you want to get fresh produce at the store, always turn to the farmers markets in your area instead. You could even take a look at community-supported aquaculture.

The problem with shopping at regular stores for produce is that they import, truck and otherwise do everything possible to keep you stocked with every fruit or vegetable option youve ever known, all year round. Now while this might be very nice as a convenience, it isn't very healthy. To begin with, trucking or flying fruits and vegetables in from around the world contributes to the global warming problem and it tends to be very expensive. And then, it isn't even considered the healthiest thing to eat foods that are not in season in your area. Try to keep count of what is in season every month, and keep to that kind of produce. You'll find that it's much healthier and cheaper.

You can also save a lot of money when you decide to get fresh produce in bulk. If you have a small family, buying in bulk may seem a bit difficult. What do you do with all that stuff? You could though, get together with friends and neighbors to buy in bulk.
