But this happens to be kind of a limiting way to go about it.

Keyboards that feature this kind of lighted guide system don't let you learn just about any song that you want. They come with an inbuilt set of factory-prepared songs; and you can perhaps buy a few songs later. Basically, you're locked into what the company will give you. How do you learn keyboard when you want to pick your own songs?

Some music teachers use the sticker method that can work great for simple songs that span no more than one octave. This is where you pick up a bunch of colored stickers, and stick them the keys of one octave on your child's keyboard. And then, to map out how a song is to be played, you just have to make different colored dots on a book. Your child will know which keys to press.

Of course, this isn't as great a method as the lighted keyboard one. Notation that is marked out with colors can only show a child what key to press next. It can't show the child how long the key is to be pressed, which is an important part of the kind of instruction the child needs. However, this is easily got around by singing the out first.

In short, you need to do anything possible to get your child to accept music instruction. Anything that doesn't help a child learn enthusiasm for music is a wasted method.
