A Guide to Freshwater Aquariums

I'm not much of a pet person. I think dogs are messy and loud and that cats are nasty and smelly. If you're still reading this without being outraged, that means you probably agree. One pet that I do like are fish. I think fish are beautiful, easy to care for and a really great pet for my busy lifestyle. You still get all of the same benefits of pet ownership (lower stress, longer life, lower rate of depression) without all of the hassle. Well, so long as you stick to freshwater aquariums.

Personally, I find that the fish I can get for freshwater aquariums are really beautiful. Yes, there are some truly gorgeous saltwater fish out there. There's not denying that. But the amount of work needed on saltwater aquariums as compared to freshwater aquariums are daunting. Not to mention the price! Saltwater aquariums and all the equipment needed to maintain them are sometimes two to ten times as expensive as freshwater aquariums.

Freshwater aquariums are incredibly easy to take care of. You really only need a couple of minutes a few times a day. The most important thing with freshwater aquariums is maintain consistency. Once you have established a comfortable water temperature for your fish, it becomes a matter of keeping it at that level.

One of the easiest ways for novice or new owners of freshwater aquariums to mess up their freshwater aquariums is to overfeed fish. When you overfeed fish, you'll increase the chances of disease, that much seems obvious. But all of the uneaten food will make a serious mess of even the cleanest freshwater aquariums.

You can get plants for your freshwater aquariums to create a prettier waterscape and environment for your fish, and this means you should probably install an additional light for your freshwater aquariums. Keep in mind, however, that if you don't have plants in your fresh-water aquariums, you should keep those additional lights of at all times except for feeding and viewing. The additional light will lead to an increase in algae growth. That will make a mess of any freshwater aquariums as well as endanger your fish to additional diseases and sicknesses. Not to mention it makes your freshwater aquariums look ugly.

I'll admit, with the fish in my freshwater aquariums, I can't take them for a walk or snuggle up with them on the couch. But for my active lifestyle and long hours, my two freshwater aqauriums with the most beautiful fish in the world are all the animal companions that I need.
