Exploring A Career In Game Design

The first one is "Rules of Play", by Eric Zimmerman and Katie Salen. These two New York City game designers explore the field from an academic perspective, examining both digital and non-digital titles to learn the core elements that make a game a game. For a more hands-on approach, I also recommend Richard Rouses "Game Design: Theory and Practice." The designer worked on titles from the classic arcade era as well as the modern day, and his book offers essential interviews and advice on every step of the process.

One common mistake that aspiring game designers make is an obsessive focus on their field of interest. Yes, you should play games to understand how they work, but you also need to learn about and get inspiration from other media as well. Too many new designers are so immersed in the ludological world of games that they cant reach beyond self-imposed barriers. Game design is equal parts art and science, and you need to balance them harmoniously to find true success. Always be looking to broaden your horizons and experiment, even if its only in small ways during a project.

And, of course, the best way to prove your competency as a game designer is to design games. There are a number of free or cheap game production programs available that can be learned fairly quickly some popular ones include Game Maker and Gamestar Mechanic. With these tools, you can rapidly translate your game concepts into playable prototypes, letting you test and experience your games and iterate them forward. Game design is an intensely collaborative process involving a whole team, so the more experience you get taking feedback and learning from it the better.
