The Field of Computer Engineering

The field of computer engineering is wide. This is because computer engineers are expected to cover a wide syllabus before they can be certified computer engineers. An engineer is expected to analyze, evaluate and design computer systems, both hardware and software. The work can involve either a large manufacturing system or it can involve more detailed work like a small smart device or instrument. In most cases, computer engineers are expected to solve certain challenges or problems that integrate computer capabilities. In the process of solving a challenge, they usually come up with a new product. Their work also involves planning, development, testing and supervision of computer hardware manufacture. This can involve anything from chips to device controllers.

Another aspect of their work is providing an interface between the different hardware components under development. This means that they work on the circuits, architecture and the software. Other areas would include computer networks, data transmission and multimedia. As a general rule computer engineers must understand logic design, computer interfacing, microprocessor system design and architecture in addition to developing software applications. For students taking computer engineering, there is the option to specialize. For example, there is the option to undertake artificial intelligence that involves designing intelligent systems such as robotics, computer vision or pattern recognition, Very Large Scale Integration which involves integrated circuits or they may specialize in systems and computations. Computer engineers are thus expected to possess strong analytical skills and to be detail oriented. Since they will be working with other engineers and others outside the engineering team, they should also be team players.

In their day to day lives, computer engineers are concerned with design, development and implementation of computer technology for consumer, commercial, industrial and military applications. A good engineer is therefore one who is creative, inquisitive, detail-oriented and analytical. In order to share their research and experience with those outside their circles they are also expected to have the ability to communicate both in writing and orally. Engineers usually work in offices or laboratories. Most will usually be found juggling between laboratories and their offices. With technology today however, many of these engineers are telecommuting and working remotely. They can be found working in all sorts of companies. In fact it is hard to find a company that does not require a computer engineers expertise to develop, analyze and deploy their products and systems.
