Understanding what it takes to go about Becoming a Fashion Designer

In the sitcom Friends, Rachel has never actually studied fashion. She's just obsessed with it. And she gets job after job in the fashion industry just because she has this need to absorb knowledge about the fashion industry. This is actually a quality you need if you plan on becoming a fashion designer.

If you just find yourself thinking about how the clothes your friends wear would look better if only they were tailored a bit differently, if your idea of a relaxing evening is turning the television off and easing back with a copy of Vogue, if at the movies you scarcely notice what the story is as much as you notice the kind of clothes the leading characters are wearing, you could say that you're quite in the right mental space you need to be to think about becoming a fashion designer.

Now becoming a fashion designer isn't just about designing clothes. There are all kinds of subspecialties into fashion designing world even in the creative areas. Whichever area you should decide on specializing in, you have to realize that the creative career choices don't pay well at first. You have to be prepared to work for practically nothing and work with a great deal of dedication for the longest time. It's only when you make a name for yourself that it begins to become well-paying.

Becoming a fashion designer, the first thing you want to do is to look for a well-respected fashion school. Certainly, you could go with an offbeat school that hasn't really made a name for itself yet, because you believe that the faculty is truly qualified. Now this wouldn't be a bad idea at all. It's the education that you get that really makes the difference. If you can go to a really respected fashion school on the other hand, you'll find that the name on your resume opens doors. You do want to see as far as he can how this might be possible.

Getting into one of these well-respected places, you do need to prove that you have what it takes. The way a regular college would expect an admission essay from you, ay one of these places, a portfolio that shows your drawing abilities and your eye for fashion, would be necessary.

Fashion designing isn't just about drawing a killer design though. You need to be intimately familiar with how the needle and thread work how fabrics work. You need to be able to show a portfolio that you've actually worked on sewing by hand and by machine. If you have pictures of creations you've made by yourself, that would be a definite plus. If possible, you could show that you've apprenticed with a tailor to gain a little bit of experience.

At fashion school, you'll learn all about drawing, colors, about fabrics, the human form, cutting techniques and so on. It takes four years, and the end, you have your opportunity to display what you created, at a college fashion show.
