Your Guide To Aquarium Care

Theres no denying that a tank full of fish can add a touch of exotic beauty to any home. But, like with any pet, you need to keep their environment clean and healthy or else they will suffer. Aquarium care is one of the under-represented aspects of being a fish owner, and many new icthyophiles lack the knowledge they need to really keep their tank up to snuff. As a long-time fish owner, I feel like I can help the novice out with a few simple tips for better living conditions for their scaly new pets. So lets get started!

The daily dose of aquarium care is fairly minimal, but its important to keep on a schedule and keep up with maintenance before any more serious problems arise. The most important thing to do each and every day is to check the various pieces of equipment that maintain the tanks temperature and oxygen level. Different fish thrive at different temperatures, so make it a part of your routine to confirm that the thermometer is giving the correct reading at least once a day. Fluctuations in temperature can have severe adverse effects on your fish, so for their safety you should ensure the tank is exactly how they like it. Making sure the pump and filter are also operating properly should barely take a minute, but if theyre not the results can be disastrous as well.

One thing that many new fish owners do not realize is that fish run on a day-night cycle similar to other diurnal animals. That means that having a light on in the tank constantly can be hazardous to their mental state. For proper aquarium care, ensure that your tank light is only on when you are observing your fish, not overnight. A simple timer light can replicate the natural passing of the sun in a way that will help the fish feel like they are in their proper environment. Constant light can cause fish to become agitated and aggressive, which you dont want.

The most major part of aquarium care is, thankfully, something you wont find yourself doing all too often changing the water. No filter system is one hundred percent effective, and byproducts will slowly and steadily accrete in your tank. However, many fish owners think that proper aquarium care mandates that they remove everything from the tank and completely clean and sterilize it. This is simply not the case you will achieve better results in a more fish-friendly way by cycling out less water more often. Simply unplug all appliances from the tan, and clean surfaces with a tank scraper. Redistribute the gravel in the floor of the tank (try not to disturb your finned friends when you do so) and drain approximately a third of the water when everythings clean. Replace it with naturally aged water within 2 degrees Farenheit of the original aquarium temperature and voila a clean tank with half the hassle.
