The Windy City may not have the cultural cachet of New York or Los Angeles, but Chicago is starting to get a reputation as a foodies delight. Chefs from all over the globe are making their way to the Windy City to ply their trade, and as a result the last decade has seen a startling increase in top-notch restaurants for Midwest eaters. After spending many years in the town, I feel like I have a pretty good idea of who the best of the best are, and Im here to share it with you. This list is my opinion of the best Chicago restaurants Im sure theres some I left out, but their omission was far from intentional.

Charlie Trotters is the first place I think of when my mind turns to the best Chicago restaurants. In many ways, Chef Trotter is responsible for the influx of new dining experiences to the Windy City founding his painstakingly-crafted contemporary American restaurant in 1987, he has held up a consistently high streak of quality for over two decades. Trotter is also held as one of the masters of wine/food pairing, and his cellar is stocked to the rafters with fine vintages that perfectly complement his dishes.

Located on the fortieth floor of the Stock Exchange, Everest could take a bid for one of the best Chicago restaurants on location alone. Thankfully, the cuisine of Chef Jean Joho lives up to the surroundings, with a seven-course tasting menu spotlighting his mastery of New French style. This is one of the greatest fancy date spots in the entire city, with flabbergasting views and spectacular food combining for an unforgettable experience.

No list of the best Chicago restaurants would be complete without Alinea owner Grant Achatz is the poster boy for the up-and-coming trend of "molecular gastronomy," and his famed tasting menu pushes pretty much every envelope in the gustatory world in a 24-course taste explosion. Achatzs approach to food preparation is among the most innovative of any American chef, and a meal at Alinea will be one you will remember your whole life. And yes, on occasion there is a rare misfire in the kitchen and one of the chefs boundary-breaking dishes just doesnt work for the palate, but in some ways that makes eating here even more exciting. Alinea doesnt play it safe, and thats the mark of a true culinary innovator.

So those are my picks for the best Chicago restaurants if you disagree, Ill be happy to try your fave any day of the week. But youre buying.
