What is an LED TV? A Simple Answer to a Simple Question

The technology that pushes consumer electronics advances very quickly. And perhaps these days, but there's no single area of consumer technology that sees as much innovation on a regular basis as television technology. Just think about it from the late 70s to the late 90s, the only thing they did to televisions was to make the screens darker and somewhat flatter. Remote controls and electronic controls became common too, but basically as far as the picture went, somewhat flatter and darker screens were all you got. That's not how it is these days. First came the flatscreen CRT television in the mid-90s, and then plasma, and then LCD, and then superpowerful compact projectors. Now, everyone's wondering about what is an LED TV, exactly.

Well, if LED and LCD didn't sound nearly the same, no one would ever get these two things technologies mixed up. People look at the nearly identical names and think that an LED TV must be a kind of television the way LCD and plasma are different kinds of television.

If you're wondering what is an LED TV, it's pretty simple. Consider the compact projectors you get today that help you project any image source on a screen or wall. Now those projectors use those three colored bulbs to project images, right? So imagine that you saw an advertisement in which they claimed that they had invented a new kind of a lightbulb to use in place of those three conventional colored bulbs. Reading that, you wouldn't think that they had invented an all-new kind of projector, now would you? You would just wonder if you could buy those bulbs and stick them in your old projector.

And that's exactly how you should think about an LED TV. Your regular LCD TV is kind of like the page of a book in a dark room. There could be anything on the screen, but you couldn't see it if the screen wasn't lit with a special strip light inside the TV. You could find an LCD TV in the repair shop that was in for a blown strip light. If you darkened the room and flashed a flashlight on the screen, you'd see all the pictures.

So now that you understand that an LCD TV needs internal lighting with a simple strip light, you're in some kind of position to understand and answer to the "what is an LED TV" question. What if you took out the strip lights that have a tendency to blow and generate heat and all that, and replaced them with space- and energy-efficient LEDs?

It's still in LCD TV, but you just replaced the light source inside. Perhaps all of this would be less confusing if they did the right thing in named the regular LCD TV a "strip light LCD TV". You wouldn't ever take that to mean that the strip light was some kind of special technological innovation, would you? Since youve always known strip lights, youd just guess that there was a strip light there to light something up. And that's the way you should understand and LED TV to. There are LEDs in there to light things up.

Well, when those LED TVs first came around, they charged an arm and a leg for them. These days, the price difference is about $100. Should you pay the difference? Well, you do get a more brilliantly-lit picture. If that's important to you, then you really should go for it.
