Most cities of course have more than one hostel. If you're looking for a Chicago hostel, for example, you're going to get to choose from at list of at least ten places to rest your weary bones. Everything from Chicago Hostel International to Fat Johnny's Hostel of Last Resorts (kind of an ominous sounding moniker) pop up on a google search, and it's up to you to figure out which one best suits your needs with regard to price, location, availability, and lack of sketchiness. Or inclusion of sketchiness, if that's your thing.
The best reviewed Chicago Hostel is the Hostelling International Chicago Summer Hostel, which is regarded as clean, well located, with a friendly staff and a youngish (20s-30s) atmosphere. Of course, some folks rated it as too quiet for their needs; many travelers who visit hostels are the partying types who look for a Bacchanal as much as a hostel on their journeys. From the reviews, it sounds like Hostelling International Chicago Summer Hostel isn't that type of place.
If you're looking for something a little younger and hipper, you might want to try the AAE Chicago Parthenon Hostel, where the average age is more geared towards college kids (18-24) and its location is more convenient to some of Chicago's nightlife. Your choice of course.
The one thing that's changed about hostel living since my days traveling is the apparent cost. It used to be about fifteen bucks to crash for a night anywhere from Amsterdam to Phoenix, but with more people traveling and more of them apparently willing to "rough it" a bit, hostels have become more of a destination for folks. As such, they've cleaned up a bit, started providing more luxuries like free breakfasts and guides of the town, and, sadly, now charge more. This could be a result of inflation, at least partly, but for the most part it's a result of supply and demand. More people use hostels than ten or fifteen years ago, so now the hostels charge more. Simple as that, sadly.
That said, hostel living and traveling is still a rite of passage that most college kids should go through. It helps you learn independence and is a great way to see the world.
