Stress relieving activities for your Employees

So you are manager at a large corporation, and you have several employees under you. What can you do for your employees that won't cost anything, and that still helps with morale, physical, mental and emotional well-being in your employees and productivity all around? You can bring in breathing exercises and other stress relieving activities into the workplace, of course.

Stress, anxiety, tension you hear these words bandied about all the time these days. But it isn't just some kind of popular hype that everyone's agreed to believe in. There have been studies done by the American Psychological Association and published in their Stress in America report that show that not only do one out of two Americans feel stress in the workplace, but that the numbers are really growing quickly. Since it's pretty clear in all kinds of studies that a stressed-out employee is a less productive employee, it really wouldn't hurt to introduce a few stress relieving activities in the office.

If you find that you have little patience for this kind of thing, all you need to do is to bring in the simplest stress relieving activities of them all breathing techniques.

Start with the belly breath. This is where the stressed-out person breathes air in through the nose to completely fill his lungs. He imagines that the air is completely bloating him up. And he lets the air puff his stomach out. To breathe out, he exhales through his nose and flattens the stomach as he does it.

Since most people are chest breathers, it might be easy to try this breathing technique while lying down and putting one hand over one's stomach and the other over one's chest. This way, you can be in touch with what part of your body you are moving. You just need to do this for about 2 minutes while holding each breath in for about 10 seconds at a time.

Up next comes the 6-second breath. This is where you inhale deeply for 2 seconds, hold your breath for one second, and then exhale slowly over 2 seconds again. But that's just 5 seconds; why are they calling it the 6-second breath? Well, you're given one second between one cycle and the next. It's good to breathe in this way since our usual way of breathing is to do it rather quickly like 20 times a minute.

And finally, try the somewhat unconventional Sitali breath, where you do a breathing exercise with your tongue stuck out. It's yoga technique. Basically, you need to stick your tongue out and curl it upwards towards your nose; and then, you breathe in very strongly by your nose. You breathe out through your nose, too. You can tell your employees that this is a great technique to use when they are particularly stressed.
