It's actually quite a popular trend parents holding their children back from kindergarten for a few months or perhaps a year in the hopes that their children will in the meantime grow smarter than the other children and leap ahead. Well, research now proves that this to be completely wrong. Children who attend kindergarten and then the rest of school as early as possible turn out to be much more motivated and much smarter in life because school makes kids smarter.
A child's brain grows at a very rapid pace up until he turns six or so. Putting him in school as early on in this growth process as possible is a great way to take advantage of it. But of course, you can't send your child to school at three months old. There is a certain minimum age for these things. So how do you know that your child is in a state of kindergarten readiness?
Basically, there is no single number you can look at that tells you that your child is ready to start school. You need to really understand the state of development your child is in to make an informed decision.
The education laws tell us that a child isn't supposed to be considered to be in a state of kindergarten readiness until he turns five. If your child isn't five by between September 1 and December 1 of an year, you'll have to wait for the following session. In some school districts, the cutoff draws the line in June. In some school districts there is no cut-off at all. But the school districts rules for kindergarten readiness arent often the best way to gauge the situation.
What you need to do is to see if your child is able to speak clearly, understand what's said to him, think like a reasonable child and to get along with other children. Some children may be quite advanced, intelligence-wise, but may be emotionally quite childlike. Some may be quite well-advanced in both areas, but may not be quite there language-skills wise. Experts believe that you shouldn't really worry that much about your child's physical growth.
If your child is developed enough emotionally, verbally and intelligence-wise, you can say that you child has attained the stage of kindergarten readiness.
