Highway Traffic Safety

Driving is fundamentally the same on any road, but there are different rules and situations that arise when driving on any highway. These roads are made to move more people from one spot to another without having to stop for lights or other common traffic issues. If you are learning to drive on the highway, or you are near one that you use often and you have to include this in your teen's early driving lessons, make sure you know about highway traffic safety so that you can teach them right and so that you can avoid accidents if at all possible.

Highway traffic safety is largely about teaching the right driving rules and also teaching your teens or yourself to be defensive drivers. It is often the aggressive drivers on the road that are involved with or that have caused accidents. Defensive driving is about avoiding aggressive drivers, keeping one's cool, and about driving in a way that is meant to keep everyone safe on the road. Defensive driving can be hard at times, but it is the safest way to go about driving on any highway.

Merging is an important part of highway traffic safety. It can be hard to learn to merge properly and how to maintain speed and control of vehicle while trying to see in mirrors if a spot is open to merge from on-ramps. This comes naturally with time. A good driver should also be taught that if cars are moving down an on ramp that it is safest to move to the left lane to allow them to merge easily. If this is not possible, they may have the right of way in the right lane as apposed to those merging, but it is always best to slow down to allow merging or accidents could occur.

If you live anywhere near a highway, you are aware that road construction is just a fact of life. If you live in northern climes, you understand that much of the construction is done during summer. Those that speed through construction sites face heavy fines, removal of license, and can also hit a worker. These things should be taught. It is also wise to teach good drivers that going as fast as one can coming up on a lane merge to get up front of the line causes accidents and patience in construction areas is always the best way to deal with traffic, even if the driver is late getting to their destination.

Sleepiness is another huge problem in regards to highway traffic safety. This is important when driving at night, but can also be a problem during the day. There are many great truck drivers out there, but there are always some on the road that are short on sleep. There are also distracted drivers, tired drivers who refuse to stop, and other impaired drivers on the road. Learning to identify and avoid such drivers can greatly reduce the chances of any good, rest, and defensive driver from being involved in a crash.
