In the Glass Baby Bottles vs Plastic Debate, which Side

In the Glass Baby Bottles vs Plastic Debate, which Side should you be On?

Buy a plastic baby bottle and the manufacturer will (nearly) always use a chemical called BPA in its manufacture. While scientists haven't really studied BPA in any great detail, whatever they know isn't very encouraging, at all. Any container made of plastic that contains BPA is going to leech some of this chemical into whatever you put into the container like your baby's formula. Every time your baby has her meal, she's also getting a side order of BPA. So in the glass baby bottles vs plastic debate, does glass win every time? Should you always choose it over plastic?

They haven't really tested humans for what happens when they take BPA in. Tests on animals have shown that they are bad for brain development, the immune system, reproduction, and so on. They can cause cancer in lab rats and make people fat. People typically have far higher levels of BPA in their systems than scientists have tested on lab animals. Is this a firm blow against plastic and polycarbonate in the glass baby bottles vs plastic debate?

Of course, plastic baby bottles arent the only things we have BPA in. You'll find them in toys, water bottles, in any kind of food that is sold in cans. Does it make any sense worrying about glass baby bottles vs plastic then?

Well, babies happen to be smaller and far more susceptible. But there are some things you can do to help keep your baby safe. Keeping your baby safe from exposure to chemicals for no reason wouldn't be a bad idea. You can't just take your baby far from BPA by switching to glass bottles. Because formula comes packaged in cans. Cans that are lined with BPA.

A great thing to do here would be to just choose to breast-feed instead of bottle-feed. That takes care of all the BPA exposure your child gets in one fell swoop. And then, if you do have to use the bottle, say, to feed your baby when you're away at work or something, use glass instead. If you have to have plastic, they do have BPA free plastic. Of course, they aren't as pretty as polycarbonate. They are not see-through. You could also choose a new kind of biodegradable plastic called polyactide.

If you do use polycarbonate bottles, make sure never to put them in the microwave. The warmer they get, the more BPA they leak. And make sure that you never use very hot formula to put in the bottle. That will make it leech chemicals to.
