Almost all furniture painting techniques for used furniture begin with doing a thorough job of stripping the article of furniture in question to expose the wood underneath all the polish. Even if you don't go so far as to completely strip the wood, you could at least sand it down quite thoroughly. Basically, the idea is to roughen the surface properly so that the paint does stick. It can be really easy too you just need to use paint stripper. You want to be careful while you use paint stripper though. Its like acid, and it really burns your skin.
Once you've stripped all the old polish off, you have a job on your hands stripping all the stripper off. But don't worry, that isn't as hard as it looks. You just have to sand everything down with a sponge sander and wipe everything off.
Now that your furniture is all bare and a clean slate, you can begin applying your furniture painting techniques to it. The first thing you want to start with before you put any paint on, is you really want to start by swabbing the whole thing with primer.
Primer is kind of an optional item. You need to use it on wood that's completely bare and clean. If however, you should find that the paint remover hasn't managed to completely take all the old polish off, you could have a problem on your hands. Polish is an oily substance. If you paint over it, it can begin to stain the paint. It will show up as an unsightly patch. Use a primer-cum-sealer though, and it'll seal everything in.
The painting is the most fun part. You can use a regular indoor latex paint of any color that you choose. You just need to brush in the direction of the grain of the wood, and put on a couple of coats. To really do a good job, you have to wait for 10 days for the paint really, really dry hard before applying finishing.
After the wait is up, it's time to do the waxing to really make your paint look beautiful. Just buy some paste wax in a natural color, rub it on and buff it wel,l and your furniture's going to look professionally painted.
