How do you know how much Memory Foam Density you

How do you know how much Memory Foam Density you Need?

About 10 years ago, if you wanted to choose a memory foam mattress or mattress topper, it was pretty easy. Depending on the store you went to, you'd see one or perhaps two brands. And each brand would have perhaps two or three kinds of model. Memory foam has long since become quite commoditized. Prices have dropped and dozens of new manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon. When that happens, of course, to differentiate themselves from one another, the manufacturers always come out with all kinds of new takes on the concept. There is one constant in all of this that will help you navigate the complex market in this product today memory foam density.

As much as all the manufacturers have tried to muddy the waters with all their innovation, they havent been able to escape one basic fact of physics the denser foam is, the better it is going to be able to provide support. Learn a bit about how memory foam density works for you, and you can right away head to the market armed with real knowledge to help with a choice.

Choose memory foam density that's 6 pounds per cubic foot at least, and you buy a mattress that is going to last you for a good long time and give you excellent support. You can basically buy this and believe that youll be sleeping in the same kind of comfort ten years from now. If you buying memory foam for the kind of back support that it's offers, high density is what will do it for you.

Memory foam tends to behave in a peculiar way. When you have high density foam, it can feel extremely stiff when you first lie on it. You might even wonder if you made the wrong kind of purchase. Keep lying there though, and the foam warms up to your body heat and literally molds around your contours. So before you actually decide on the kind of memory foam density you need, you probably want to make sure that you really understand how density works in the area of comfort.

Memory foam that is specified as being about four pounds per cubic foot is foam you would call medium density. If you have no real back trouble and you just want good support, comfort and affordability in a memory foam mattress, you probably want to go with one of these. These tend to be just right not as disconcertingly stiff as high density foam and not something to sink into like low-density foam. And since there's less material used, it's cheaper too. If you're really trying to decide on what to buy, this could be a great first-time purchase.

And finally, there is low-density foam that's no more than 3 pounds a cubic foot. It wouldn't be a bad idea to buy one of these the first time around, too. These are the cheapest and give you the most bang for your buck when it comes to softness and a luxurious feel.

If only our Policy on Mathematics Education could Change

If only our Policy on Mathematics Education could Change

Some people, no matter how many years of practice they get trying to do simple math in their heads, just never learn to do well. Could there be an explanation for this an explanation for instance that gets them off the hook? Well, research at the Johns Hopkins University actually may be able to do that. Apparently, some of us are just genetically hopeless at math (as if anyone needed proof of that). Math education really would benefit from a bit of awareness of this.

Apparently, to do well in math, a person needs something that the researchers call a number sense. What is a number sense, you ask? Take for instance how some people can look into a doctor's waiting room or something for just a second, and come away with an impression of exactly how many people there are there. They don't even need to count. Some people can just know how many minutes have passed since a phone call started or something. They don't need to count. Apparently, your ability to do real high school math depends in great part on how good you are with your number sense.

So researchers are now wondering if before schools try to go and teach a kid any real book-math (to coin the term), they should try to teach them a number sense if they don't have one already. This could get them ready for real school math. This could be very important for the way math education is done.

In general, humans are born with a number sense. For the study, they rounded up a couple of hundred four-year-olds to test them for number sense. They were for instance, shown a bunch of dots of different colors on a computer for a second. And then, they were asked to estimate what dots were the most numerous. The children also given a test for elementary math of the kind that children their age are usually given in school. They found that kids who did well with the flashing dots test did well in elementary math as well.

It's important to remember for those who have a stake in mathematics education that while a number sense may be inborn in some, it is completely learnable to others.

America today is a country that's losing touch with its roots, so struck with fear as if that India and China may be overtaking it in math. There is even talk of America taking inspiration from India's mathematics education system (which isn't a good one and all as anyone in the know will tell you). Perhaps all America should do is to take up mathematics education in a scientific way instead.

A New Way to Try to Manage Your Finances

If there is one thing that the personal-finance TV shows and the magazine articles agree on, it has to be this that if you're serious about managing your finances well, you had better draw up a budget and stick to it as closely as possible. And an admonition to draw a budget is hard to disagree with too. It helps you set financial goals, save, get rid of debt and so on. The problem is that while budgets can be very good if you follow them, the truth is that most people find it very hard to follow budgets because they're just unpleasant things. Asking a person to follow a budget is like telling a smoker that he just has to try hard to quit. When the message you recommend is very unpleasant, people just don't follow them.

Still find it hard to believe that a budget can be a bad idea as a way to manage your finances? Let's take a closer look.

Let's start with how hard it can be to draw up a budget. Drawing up a budget requires you have to plan far ahead, plan for every expense you will need to make through the week (whether you can predict what they may be or not) and writing them down. Why, people can't even remember often what they've spent that very day when they come back home. Basically, it's quite impractical to expect your average person to think of every single thing he will spend over the coming month every birthday party, every date, every gift, every school trip and write it down and plan for it.

Actually, trying to draw up a budget and then keep to it is a full-time job. It can take hours of work every week to total everything up and to look at how closely you are following your budget. Of course, budgeting programs like Quicken try their best to make things easier for you. But it still is difficult. And the main reason budgets fail is simple they make you feel like you're on a diet. How can anyone live like that their whole lives?

Well, is there an alternative when it comes to trying to manage your finances?

How about scrapping the plan that you need to plan ahead, and instead taking advantage of the fact that hindsight is 20/20? You could take a look at how things went over the past month, and check to see if you were anywhere near meeting your financial goals. And then you can make a mental note about what you need to change.

For instance, how about if the first day of the month, you were to tell yourself that you aim to save a certain amount 10%, for instance. On the last day of the month, you can look back and see how much youve managed to save. If you aren't happy with the figure youve arrived at, you can look back over the previous month, and try to see what you could've done differently. Over the course of several months, you'll find that youve learned to evolve and shape your habits better.

The Makita Lithium Ion the Little Drill That Could

The Makita Lithium Ion the Little Drill That Could

Ask almost anyone whether they be handy around projects around the home or not and they have to admit that sometimes, a cordless power drill simply can get things done that nothing else would be natural fit for, or take care of with as much ease. There aren't that many tools around that you could say that about that you could find a use for them in just about every situation. A standard corded drill can turn out to be just be too bulky, too heavy and too powerful for most standard uses. What you need is something like the Makita lithium ion cordless drill kit.

The Makita BDA350 cordless 18V lithium-ion 3/8" angle drill is what they call it if you're going to look it up. The great thing about it is that it's designed to reach where traditional drills do not. And its designed to be the handy persons assistant by their side no matter what kind of project you decide to take up.

The thing about this Makita lithium ion is that it delivers on the promise of a power tool that can fit into any workspace. The slim profile design takes care of that.

Of course, its likely that you are wondering about how "slim profile" doesn't exactly inspire a lot of confidence when it is used to describe a power tool. How powerful can it be when is designed to be small, light and easy to handle?

To begin with, the power comes out of a custom-made Makita 18V four pole motor that manages to put out 121-inch-pound of torque. Of course, all that power would be quite useless if it didn't have a battery pack that was up to powering all that hard work adequately. Luckily, the 18V lithium ion battery pack takes care that.

"Slim profile" also means that this little drill is truly portable. All that power and battery capacity at a mere 4 pounds. Who knew that looks and power could be blended into a ferocious little thing this well?

But perhaps to merely keep saying that it's powerful doesn't really get it across how powerful it actually is. When you crank the drill up to its full 1800 RPM level, you can feel the high torque motor biting into just about any kind of work with gusto steel, wood, masonry. And can you believe that it comes with a flashlight built in?

Yes, it has inbuilt LED flashlight to help light up your work. If you've had trouble with a plastic-bodied drill before, you'll be quite comfortable with the sturdy build of this machine.

The Mad Hatter character from Alice was one of the best hits among last year's Halloween costume sales. A Low Sodium Diet may be Tough. But it could

A Low Sodium Diet may be Tough. But it could mean better Health

You might hear a lot about how the use of too much salt in your food is bad for you because it gives you high blood pressure and makes your body retain fluid; but just try going the other way and depriving your body of salt altogether. Salt is essential to health. It's just an excess of the stuff that's bad. If you have been battling hypertension or any of the other health problems that come from an excess of sodium in the system, you could find yourself looking at the business-end of a doctor-mandated low-sodium diet pretty soon.

It's not easy to go on a low-sodium diet, of course. If you have hypertension or fluid retention, often, the doctor will ask you to use no more than 4 g of salt a day. That's like just a teaspoonful of the stuff. How on earth could anyone live on that level?

Well, as hard as it may be, you'll see definite health improvements if you knuckle under. You need to go about the way you use your salt the way weight watchers tend to watch every calorie. It certainly is an attainable thing to try to restrict the amount of sodium that goes into your food. But there is work to put in.

Processed foods of the kind you buy at the supermarket will usually list the sodium content of the package on the label. They'll usually express this in milligrams a milligram being the 1000th part of a gram. If you're allowed 4 g of sodium a day, that's 4000 mg. You'll need to add them all up looking at the label on every bag of chips and every box of cereal that you buy.

But not all of the sodium in our diet comes from table salt. The baking soda that they use in baked goods contains sodium, for instance. Luckily, they list all of this under Sodium label on nutrition labels. Of course, certain medicines contain sodium too; if you find that you have been cutting down on the salt everywhere but you aren't seeing the kind of results you hoped for, consider the possibility that the bottled water you drink could have sodium, and so could certain medications cough syrups and so on.

The greatest area of risk of course, lies in eating outside. It's very hard to get to know what goes into the food that you eat at a restaurant. If you're really serious about your low-sodium diet, staying away from restaurant food would be the smart choice to make.

Of course it's easy to strike everything off your ingredients list and to declare yourself sodium-free. How exactly do you live when you don't have salt to resort to, to add taste your food with? Well, there are lots of low-sodium recipe websites that you could refer to that try the help you substitute for the absence of taste with other and ratings garlic, lemon, pepper, vinegar and so on. Salt substitutes like potassium-based salt can work too if your doctor allows them.

This is What the Insurance Company Looks at Before Offering

This is What the Insurance Company Looks at Before Offering You a Low Cost Auto Insurance Quote

Basically, the kind of money have to put down to insure your car gives you a major heart burn and all you want is for them to dig around and find a way to offer you a discount. And the insurance people on the other hand have very strict rules about this. They will only offer anyone a low cost auto insurance quote if they qualify in one of three basic tests they have. There may be other factors that come into play, but basically, you have to get past them in at least one of these three areas of scrutiny they put you through.

When it comes to buying auto insurance, the insurance people usually want to know what kind of driving history and driver profile you own. Its the way any financial application process usually starts with a question about your credit score. They want some kind of proof to see if you are a safe driver. No matter how great you are with everything else, if they find out that you indulge in risky behavior when driving like speeding, you don't qualify for their low cost auto insurance rates.

They'll basically get in touch with your local DMV for a readout of your driving history. They'll be happy if they see that you've been driving for a few years, how you haven't had any accidents or anything, and so on. If they see anything there to mar a perfect record, youd better forget about a reasonable insurance price.

But there are other things too. Let's say for the sake of argument that you qualify as a perfectly safe driver. That's wonderful for you; but not wonderful enough. You need to qualify the other tests they put you through.

For instance, are you someone who drives his car around a lot because you have to, say, commute 50 miles to work everyday? Perhaps you're a traveling salesperson and you need to drive all the time. When you get home each day, do you have a place to park your car or do you park it out on the street? The more you are on the road, they figure, the more likely you are to get into some kind of trouble.

But let's say that you win their approval in all of the above. Even if you've been a really safe driver your whole life and youve never been in an accident, they still consider you an unsafe that if you drive a sports car. It's just the way their computer program works. If you have a sports car, even if you've had it for 10 years with no incident, they still count you as a potentially unsafe driver.

Basically, a low cost auto insurance quote is your if you play by their rules.

Help your Child Overcome Fear of Music Reading and Help

Help your Child Overcome Fear of Music Reading and Help him Learn Keyboard

Time and again, music educators come upon one inescapable conclusion to do with how to learn keyboard or any music instrument for that matter find a way that doesn't require a learner to become fluent with reading music.

Music notation is somehow unfriendly-looking to most people. It kind of looks like those strange symbols they use in higher math. It's hard to think of math or music symbols and not feel alienated. And so, music teachers and manufacturers have thought of all kinds of alternative ways to use.

The thing is, most instruments don't really lend themselves to an alternative way. It's hard to think of a way to teach the violin without any music reading skills at all, for instance. The keyboard though, is an entirely different matter. Its not expensive at all to buy a lighted keyboard for instance where the keys that you need to play to go along in a song, light up to show you kind of like the words onscreen in a karaoke song. But this happens to be kind of a limiting way to go about it.

Keyboards that feature this kind of lighted guide system don't let you learn just about any song that you want. They come with an inbuilt set of factory-prepared songs; and you can perhaps buy a few songs later. Basically, you're locked into what the company will give you. How do you learn keyboard when you want to pick your own songs?

Some music teachers use the sticker method that can work great for simple songs that span no more than one octave. This is where you pick up a bunch of colored stickers, and stick them the keys of one octave on your child's keyboard. And then, to map out how a song is to be played, you just have to make different colored dots on a book. Your child will know which keys to press.

Of course, this isn't as great a method as the lighted keyboard one. Notation that is marked out with colors can only show a child what key to press next. It can't show the child how long the key is to be pressed, which is an important part of the kind of instruction the child needs. However, this is easily got around by singing the out first.

In short, you need to do anything possible to get your child to accept music instruction. Anything that doesn't help a child learn enthusiasm for music is a wasted method.

Time to Look for a Layaway Plan

It's been years since the layaway plan concept was much of the force on the retail landscape. Walmart used to have it, but about five years ago, they dropped it altogether (except for jewelry). A number of things have conspired to bring it back from the dead. Retailers have been quick to turn on their holiday discounts this year; and store inventories, for a number of reasons, aren't very strong. What that means is that very soon, they're going to be short on all kinds of merchandise; and that should turn prices up. What does this have to do with layaway plans, you ask?

There are all kinds of stores Sears, Kmart and Best Buy for instance that allow you to just add $10 to the cost of a purchase, and then pay for it over several months. Everyone else is hopping on the bandwagon too. Walmart loves it again, Toys "R" Us does, too. Choosing a layaway plan gives you a great way to buy at today's prices especially since you know the prices will be rising for the holidays and not falling.

That's what's different this year. Usually, consumers will wait until much later to buy, because they don't want to exhaust their holiday budgets and then discover great deals, later on. This year, things have been low-priced in November because they're trying to clear out old inventory. Once that's done, everything's going to go up. If you want to get dibs on a low price right now, nows the time to do it.

So before you actually go and charge something to a layaway plan, do remember that you need to shop around to get the best kinds of prices and the best layaway terms. If you buy at Toys "R" Us for instance, you need to pay 20% down and a five-dollar fee to put your purchases on layaway. You can pay your bills in three months. Kmart has a similar plan. Some stores will actually offer you a layaway plan with a price guarantee. If prices fall after you make your purchase, you can actually ask to have the difference settled.

Well, even if a layaway plan offer does seem like a wonderful idea, do remember to exercise caution. If you ever miss a payment, there's extra fees something like $10 or so. It would be to stay away from layaway for anything other than a large purchase. You should probably do it for any kind of purchase that would be too much for your credit card.

The best deal of course is always to save up and then to buy something. If you can do that, that's the best kind of layaway plan ever.

The Latisse Eyelash Growth Product Is Said to Work Very

The Latisse Eyelash Growth Product Is Said to Work Very Well. Should You Try It?

You've probably heard about something about a product called Matisse Eyelash Growth that's been around since the FDA okayed it about three years ago. While that FDA approval should do a lot to ease your mind as to the effectiveness of this product, you're probably still a bit unsure about how safe Latisse is for your eyes, exactly. And does it really do what it promises it will to?

Well, the Latisse eyelash growth product isn't really just some kind of cosmetic thing like under-eye cream or something. In another life, it used to be a glaucoma drug that went by the name Lumigan. That one's been around for about 10 years now. In the time that the glaucoma drug was on the market, doctors and patients both noticed how it had this incredible side effect that it made your eyelashes grow long, lush and thick. There have been quite a few celebrity confessions from the likes of Mandy Moore and Claire Danes too that approve in glowing terms.

But of course, informal celebrity endorsements shouldn't be enough on their own to get you to try this product. You probably want to understand how it brings about the effects that it is capable of.

If you want a real understanding of how the Latisse Eyelash Growth product works, you're out of luck not even the scientists who made the drug know really how it works. Somehow, it manages to keep your eyelashes living for longer while also promoting eyelash growth.

When you buy the product, it's pretty simple to use. You just wet the edges of your eyelids and your lashes with the stuff. The drug, once applied, spreads to the very roots with your blinking action, and gets where it is the most needed. You're never supposed to apply it on your lower eyelid or the lashes or get any in your eyes.

The product literature warns you against accidentally getting the stuff anywhere else on your body, as it could promote hair growth there. Maybe they'll come up with some kind of baldness treatment one day using this chemical.

It takes about two months of daily use for the Latisse Eyelash Growth product to work. In about four months, they say, most people experience twice as much fullness, and 20% more darkness and length.

Unless you already have glaucoma, this product shouldn't cause any problems. But the cost might be a deterrent. It costs about $120 for a months supply.

Things to Keep in Mind when Buying Laptops for Students

Things to Keep in Mind when Buying Laptops for Students

If you are on the market for a laptop for the student in your family, there are basically four things that you need to keep in mind as you shop around. Laptops for students need to be light because they do need to carry them around a lot, and they need to be small enough to slip into a satchel or something. They need to have the kind of power your child's course of study requires, and they need to be the right operating system for the kind of software your child will be using in the course of her studies.

What that means is, if you have a student who is studying video editing or animation, you don't want one of those mass-market $300 laptops. Those will almost certainly be underpowered for this kind of thing. On the other hand, a powerful and bulky desktop replacement type with powerful graphics processing ability will be overkill somewhat for the student who just wants to take down notes in law school. Let's look into it a little bit deeper.

As much as you would want to buy the most powerful machine out there that you can afford, you do need to remember that with bag and power supply all put together, a powerful computer can end up weighing 10 pounds. It's really too much to expect students to carry around all the time. You dont want something that'll tire her out before she even gets into class. So when it comes to buying laptops for students, you have to really accept that portability trumps power.

And it's not just about how light the machine is, either. While you might find yourself loving a large 16 inch screen on a laptop when you're working at home, try using that same laptop at the coffee shop or something where there are lots of other people and you don't find yourself free to spread out. That's the kind of environment your child will be using her laptop in in class or in the dorm. There really isn't much room at a classroom desk for a large laptop. Go for something that's 11 inches or 13 inches in screen size, and your child will thank you for it.

Actually, the small size of the thing should work out really well. The smaller the screen on the laptop is, the smaller the battery has to be. All put together, it has to make for one lightweight laptop. Not to mention, a smaller screen is likely to use less power. That's more battery life for you.

Try your best to look for a laptop that has the longest lasting battery. Try to get something with seven hours of battery life at least. It shouldn't be that hard these days.

And finally, you really don't need to buy a really powerful computer unless your child really needs it in the course of her studies. You do need to remember that a young person can be really tempted to stray into gaming in her spare time if she has a really capable computer. Get as little computing power as your child can actually manage with.

Great Landscaping Ideas for a Tiny Budget

A beautiful garden can really give you something to want to come home to every day. It could also be the best addition to a home that you could make that could help raise its price on the market. A beautiful garden can be this perfect place to escape to when you need to be by yourself, too. To many people, landscaping ideas to help turn their garden into a little piece of paradise on earth can be just as important as interior design is to other people.

The great thing with most landscaping ideas is that nature is practically free. Of course, if you want it really easy, you can pay the landscapers to come in and do a professional job. But doing something nearly as good by yourself isn't that hard either. And it's free.

Building a little reflecting pond in your yard, if your neighborhood allows it, would be a spectacular idea. If you could learn a few carpentry skills and put a little crude bridge over that water body, you'd be amazed at what it could do for the look of your garden.

Landscaping ideas, if you're trying to create a Wonderland effect, don't entirely have to be about finding the right plants and the right arrangements. It can also be about bringing what you have already out to the best effect. For instance, consider investing your budget mainly in lighting additions. Remember how the interior decorators keep telling you that the right kind of lighting design can completely change the character of a room?

That's good advice. But it doesn't just apply to rooms. It can also apply to your garden. If you're on a limited budget, lighting design can make for the best kind of effects. Underwater lights for your little pond, lights to light up an ornamental tree, fairy lights lining your walkways they can all create a dramatic Wonderland effect.

Actually, lining your walkways with small and beautiful flowering bushes can be best landscaping ideas ever. Just think about it flowers and lights lining your garden paths you wouldn't ever want to leave home.

Is your Child in a State of Kindergarten Readiness?

As sports-minded parents know, redshirting is a successful method used in school sports. Parents introduce their children later than usual to sports and hope that their children will be bigger and stronger and more capable of winning. In sports, it does work too. When it comes to kindergarten readiness though, redshirting fails miserably.

It's actually quite a popular trend parents holding their children back from kindergarten for a few months or perhaps a year in the hopes that their children will in the meantime grow smarter than the other children and leap ahead. Well, research now proves that this to be completely wrong. Children who attend kindergarten and then the rest of school as early as possible turn out to be much more motivated and much smarter in life because school makes kids smarter.

A child's brain grows at a very rapid pace up until he turns six or so. Putting him in school as early on in this growth process as possible is a great way to take advantage of it. But of course, you can't send your child to school at three months old. There is a certain minimum age for these things. So how do you know that your child is in a state of kindergarten readiness?

Basically, there is no single number you can look at that tells you that your child is ready to start school. You need to really understand the state of development your child is in to make an informed decision.

The education laws tell us that a child isn't supposed to be considered to be in a state of kindergarten readiness until he turns five. If your child isn't five by between September 1 and December 1 of an year, you'll have to wait for the following session. In some school districts, the cutoff draws the line in June. In some school districts there is no cut-off at all. But the school districts rules for kindergarten readiness arent often the best way to gauge the situation.

What you need to do is to see if your child is able to speak clearly, understand what's said to him, think like a reasonable child and to get along with other children. Some children may be quite advanced, intelligence-wise, but may be emotionally quite childlike. Some may be quite well-advanced in both areas, but may not be quite there language-skills wise. Experts believe that you shouldn't really worry that much about your child's physical growth.

If your child is developed enough emotionally, verbally and intelligence-wise, you can say that you child has attained the stage of kindergarten readiness.

Great Ways to Save on everything you spend on Kids'

Great Ways to Save on everything you spend on Kids' Sports

Sports dominate American life. Go to any American suburb, and it's quite clear that next to school, kids sports is more or less the center of life. And children's sporting interests are well-provided for in the community too. There are great playing grounds for football, baseball and all the rest. It's so important to the entire community that parents and local residents get together to cheer every little game that happens to get on every evening.

Of course, kids sports are wonderful. It keeps your children happy, competitive, active and healthy. That's not the same as saying this for your wallet though. Kids sports can mean expensive equipment, lessons, greens fees, driving back and forth to practice, and so on. How do parents manage to support all of this when things are as difficult as they are today? Well, try these tips.

First, you need to realize that the entire country is gearing up for a change of heart when it comes to how to keep itself supplied of things it needs. There are all kinds of websites out there that help you buy or borrow or rent used stuff from neighbors whenever you should need them. Try NeighborGoods.com, for instance. In fact, put stuff up that you have that you're not using first. You'll find how there is a large appreciative borrowing public right in your neighborhood that'll snap it up. That'll make it easier for you to see how everyone accepts this as the done thing. If there happens to be a local outlet for Play It Again Sports the retailer, you could try that too.

Sometimes, you find that you can't directly find used sporting equipment of the kind you need. How about turning one kind of you stuff you already have into the kind of you stuff you need? What are we talking about? You just need to look around for stuff that you're not using to sell used to someone else. And you can use that money to buy all the sporting equipment your child needs.

Everyone understands the needs to economize these days. There are clothes swapping parties that friends throw for instance, so that they can get one another's clothes. You can do the same thing for kids sports equipment. You just need to organize an equipment exchange party. Who knows, that friendly family on the next street that you run into at the grocery store may have a great tennis racket that they're not using, and they may need the hockey stick and baseball bat that you have in return.

When it comes to signing your kid up for those sporting activities, those memberships and lessons can really drain on your wallet. There are all kinds of ways around this though.

A good way to get the best possible price in these things is usually to sign up for a sporting league or whatever as early as possible. They always have earlybird specials. There's another way to get in for less you can coach the team in exchange for free entry for your child. That's only if you actually know the sport that well. Best of all would be the school team, that's free. The local YMCA and the community center in your child's school both offer sporting teams for free or for very little money.

It just takes a little imagination and motivation.

How Long will the Season for Investing in Gold Last?

How Long will the Season for Investing in Gold Last?

It all began when the housing market nearly collapsed in 2008 and stock market market didn't seem to be all that happy either. People lost their retirement funds; families lost their college funds. And then this year, with S&P downgrading the credit standing of the US, the stock market has gone into tailspin again. What do you do if you are a regular small-time individual investor who's just looking to maintain his assets? You go and do what economists have always said people do in times of uncertainty you go and put your money in something that's extremely stable. You go investing in gold.

For those who are tired of seeing their savings move as if it were on a greased pole inching up in painstaking fashion only to slip down again a few months later the way gold has been behaving over the past few months can only be heartening. It's as if gold hits a new high every day a new record.

With all this action coming in from real investors who want nothing more than to see their hard-earned money stay in good shape, the gold market has suddenly become extremely attractive to speculators as well. These are people who aren't really interested in staying in the market for the security it offers. They only want to stay for as long as they need to, to make a quick buck speculating.

When a market attracts speculators in large numbers all of a sudden, people begin to wonder is this a bubble waiting to happen? Think about it in the year 2007, before the recession began, gold was about $750 an ounce. A mere 12 months later, it went up to $1000 an ounce, a never-seen-before price level. Now, today, it's about $1900 an ounce. It took gold centuries to reach $750; how did it jump up to more than twice that in just three years? Investors do worry about whether this kind of a meteoric rise signals an unhealthy environment and a collapse to follow.

Gold doesn't have any inherent value though; it's valuable just because we've all agreed that it should be valuable. It has a place in human financial history as the substance that is used to back up currency. In a time when every standard kind of investment is seen to be shaky, people have no choice but to turn to the safe haven in investing in gold that mankind has sought for centuries.

Remember the last time that gold got into a helicopter and took off? It was when gold cost $35 an ounce under President Nixon. The dollar at the time was fixed in value, pegged to the price of gold. President Nixon at one point suddenly ended this kind of fixed relationship. It was at that point that the value of gold and the value of the US dollar began to fluctuate like they were commodities. Investors however still see a relationship between the dollar and gold. When the value of one falls too much, they try to compensate by switching to the other. The US government has run up a deficit ever since Nixon; and the value of the dollar has fallen as a result. That's why investing in gold has been such a good idea ever since Nixon. That's when the price of gold really began to rise.

If you are investing in gold, how do you know when to sell? When confidence in the US government begins to rise, that's when the price of gold will begin to fall. A rise in confidence in the US government doesn't seem to be close at hand.

Investing Advice that is Best Ignored

The markets having certainly been behaving in the strangest way for years. But they aren't just playing havoc with the value of your portfolio. They are also upending a lot of standard unproven investing advice that we've always dreamed was true.

For instance, how often have you heard investing advice to the effects that you can't really predict what'll happen in the market? Well how is it than that the Tobin's q metric seems to time the market very well? This is a measure that looks at how much a company is worth and then tries to work out how much it would cost to build a company from scratch.

If a company is valued at more than that, that's a sign that there's something wrongs going on and it's going to go into a tailspin. Always make sure that you take this into account. And ignore investing advice that says that you just can't time the market.

You hear it said time and again that the markets are an efficient way of distributing wealth. This is such an accepted truth that even the Supreme Court has brought it up sometimes. Well, sorry, but the markets just aren't efficient. Consider how back in July, the Greek government bonds were trading with an annual yield of 35%. And yet, the Russell 2000 index was on absolute roll.

How is it the stock market can take a situation where everything's going to crater in three months, and then trade so well that investors think things going fine? What that means is, that you can't trust the way the markets are going. The markets are not efficient. And this is bad investing advice.

How about the old standby that if you want more returns, you had better be willing to take on more risk? Well, this isn't totally bad investing advice. But it's quite unreliable. For instance, inflation-protected US bonds are as dull as dishwater. And yet, they've done very well over the last 10 years. Over the same period of time, the S&P 500 has lost money. It doesn't always pay to go with the risky stuff. It only pays go with well-understood risks.

How about the advice that you need to put your money to work for it to do anything good? Yes, that would be a good idea. If where you put your money could actually be called work. The S&P 500 over the last 10 years could hardly be called that. If you had just saved your money in CDs, you'd have been much better off.

And finally, try to ignore investing advice tells you that putting your faith in American stocks is patriotic and the best. That's not how it works.

The International Money Transfers Guide

It is no secret that the world has become a global village in many aspects among them the exchange of money. It is now quite easy for a person living in one country to send money to another person living in another country. One way through which one can do this is by international money transfers. The latter can be done in a number of ways and one of this is by wire transfers. It is not necessary for a person to have a bank account with a bank to be able to send money by wire transfer; this is because the transfer can be made at the banks counter for foreign exchange. Just as with other kinds of services, there are fees that are charged for money transfers. It should however be noted that it is not quite easy for a person to calculate the necessary fees because in some instances the fees are not so obvious. When a person goes to send money using wire transfer they should expect to be charged by the bank for actually transferring the money. There is no standard charge between banks or countries as every one has their own. The bank that is making the transfer profits from the transfers exchange rate as it usually sends the money in foreign currency. The receiver will also be expected to pay up a certain fee once they receive their money.

SWIFT is another method that has been devised for overseas and international money transfers. This method does not only require the recipient to have a bank account, but they will also be expected to have a SWIFT number. The bank that will be doing the transfer will also require the recipient to also have an address before it can send the money. Almost every bank has a section that deals with the transfer of money between countries and it should therefore not be difficult to get a bank with which to carry out a transaction.

There are a number of advantages associated with international money transfers and among these is the security that is assured to both the sender and the recipient. This is because the bank has to get the identity of both of them to make the transaction. Additionally, there can be no sending of money if the sender does not have sufficient funds. Every piece of information that is given to the banks is kept in the records of the bank. During the electronic transfer, information is encrypted as well to make it difficult for a person to intercept or steal important information. Another advantage that is rather obvious is the speed. Money transfers can take anywhere between several hours to two days and this is very convenient for most people. Instead of having many accounts in different countries, people who do business internationally would be well placed if they used international money transfers instead.

How to Buy an Inground Pool Cover

An inground pool cover like any other cover, is designed to fulfill two kinds of functions to keep dust and debris out, and to protect your pool from the effects of exposure to harsh weather. You get them in all kinds of materials and in all kinds of designs to achieve what they are supposed to achieve, in different ways.

Let's start with the solid inground pool cover. Now these are your traditional pool covers. They are tough, they seal your pool off quite well, they keep all sunlight out of your pool so that no algae ever finds your pool a hospitable environment, and they are lightweight enough that you could manage them yourself.

If you live in an area where it gets very cold and snows, you need to make sure that you buy something made of high-quality vinyl. Vinyl is a substance that can easily harden with exposure to the elements and accumulate damage and tears. You need to make sure that the stuff you buy is of high enough quality.

What happens when you have a solid inground pool cover in place, and it rains? Well, to help you take care of all the water that accumulates on top of your pool cover, they sell you a pool cover pump. If you would like to avoid the extra expense, you could consider buying a safety cover (instead of a solid cover).

They make safety covers both out of solid materials and mesh. The solid ones, they supply with drainage panels so that you don't have to worry about water accumulating on your covers. Water just drains into our pool.

An inground pool cover made of mesh is the other kind of cover you could think of (you need to distinguish between between a pool cover that's made of mesh and safety covers that have mesh panels though. They are different things.

Now a mesh pool cover is a cover that they make out of special mesh-like material that is reflective in nature. This makes sure that any snow that settles on top of that catches enough sunlight melts as quickly as possible. More importantly, mesh pool covers, in spite of the fact that they're made of mesh with tiny holes all over, seal your pool off quite well. There's never any debris to gets into pool and the cover comes with high-quality reinforced borders. Any time there's rain or anything, the water just percolates in through the mesh. Dust and dirt don't get in though.

Such places include apartments, penthouses and so on. All is not lost however because there is always the possibility of owning an indoor vegetable garden. Apart from being ensured of fresh produce all year long, having a garden inside the house also ensures that the gardener does not have to encounter outdoor pest and by extension there will be no need buying pesticides. There is also the issue of aesthetics and with a garden inside the house it helps to make the house more beautiful. For people who find gardening to be a great way of spending time, gardening then presents a way through which they can fine self actualization.

While the possibility of having an indoor garden is such great news for quite a number of potential gardeners, one should not go into it blindly as they are bound to suffer insurmountable loss. The most important factor that should be considered when starting an indoor vegetable garden in the house is the soil to use. Unknown to most gardeners, there is special soil that should be used for indoor gardening and not the ordinary garden soil. The special soil is known as light weight mix of soil and it contains potting soil, perlite, peat, one part sand and vermiculite. Another mixture that can work is one equal parts of silica, forest mulch, perlite and sand.

Another factor that is quite important to an indoor vegetable garden is watering and it is quite sensitive because in house plants dry faster compared to the outside ones. This therefore means that there should be constant watering of the plants. In addition to this the gardener will have to do the watering by hand. Excellent drainage is also very essential for an in house garden to be successful. A garden planted inside the house also needs much lighting generally, but there are some plants that do not need as much light such as herbs, kales and lettuce.

There are quite a number of plants that can be planted inside the house and among these are tomatoes, cacti, bonsai and so on. In order for these plants to do well a person will also need special equipment and supplies. Among the equipment needed are those for maintaining humus levels, potting soil, light levels and so on. Containers are also needed for the gardening to thrive and some of the most commonly used containers are plastic pots, ceramics pots and other types as long as they have good drainage. As long as there is commitment and the right equipment it should not be difficult to have a thriving indoor vegetable garden within a short time.

Arrange for the most Trauma-Free Immunizations for Children that you

Arrange for the most Trauma-Free Immunizations for Children that you Can

Even if your baby never falls ill, she certainly has to face up to a few shots there are all those immunizations for children. The thing is, you need to make sure that those shots are as easy for your child take as possible. To make sure that your baby doesn't come off the experience all traumatized, there are a few things you can do.

Immunizations for children are bad news to them because (why else), they are painful for a short time. Thankfully, there is something you can do something about that. Ask the doctor on the day of the appointment, before you actually bring your kid in, if you can give her a little dose of acetaminophen. If the doctor okays it and if your timing is good enough, this could actually minimize the pain. The doctor might even allow you to give you kid an extra dose of the medicine at the clinic or right after you get home.

If your child is breast-feeding, you can always put him at your breast while he's receiving the shots. There is no greater calming force in the world. If you don't know it yet, study your kid when she's breast-feeding. The cuddling, the sweetness of the milk, the way she can just bury herself in there and forget the world it's all great way to it overcome anything she's upset about. In fact, you could use breast-feeding as a great way to calm her down any time.

Of course, in some cases, for any number of reasons, you don't have the option of breast-feeding her. You could try bribing your child then, playing a fun little game or something with her, turning on her favorite music and so on.

Immunizations for children are not completely without a few unknowns.

There could be allergic reactions, for instance. Basically, you have to make sure that you don't schedule anything important around the time, for a week or so right after the shots. If you have a birthday party or a vacation planned, try to reschedule something. In other words don't plan on stopping by the doctors clinic for the shots on your way to the airport to catch a flight for that holiday to the Bahamas that you've been planning.

Sometimes, even a week's buffer isn't enough. For instance, the MMR vaccine, when it does cause rashes and a fever, doesn't show up until 10 days later.

Hypoallergenic Bedding. For when your Bed gives you Nightmares even

Hypoallergenic Bedding. For when your Bed gives you Nightmares even before you get In

To those who have a low threshold for allergenic substances, the thought of going to bed at night can give them nightmares even before they fall asleep. Regular bedding tends to be chock-full of stuff that can give allergy-sensitive people a lot to worry about. It's all sneezes and sniffles in bed. That is where hypoallergenic bedding comes in.

If you have been to your allergy specialist and she recommends that you switch to hypoallergenic bedding, try these buying tips to redo your bedding solution with.

When you find yourself sneezing or otherwise getting uncomfortable every now and then, there could be more than one cause behind it. Dust mites in your bedding can be one source of the problem. Dust mites, as tiny as they are, do still put out droppings. And these are what cause flare-ups and asthma problems. It is easy to sweat in bed and make your bedclothes ever so slightly moist. And if you just leave everything there all covered up without airing everything out, there is going to be a small amount of mold another source of respiratory allergies.

These happen to be external sources of allergies. For these, all you need to do is to buy hypoallergenic slipcovers. Put them over a new mattress and pillows, and dust mites will never make it into the pillow or the mattress in the first place. If you can't find any hypoallergenic bedding, just buy high thread count bedsheets. Dust mites don't make it past them.

If it is the bedding itself that irritates you nylon and other synthetic fiber for instance you can easily find hypoallergenic bedding made of natural fiber cotton, wool, silk or down.

Any of these materials are great for hypoallergenic bedding. The only problem is that while the materials themselves do not cause allergies, they can be a great hiding places for dust mites. If using hypoallergenic bedding pillowcases and so forth doesn't seem to keep these allergens away, you could try memory foam. This is material that is known not only to resist dust mites, but to also resist mold. In fact the mold problem can be such a stubborn one that allergy-sensitive people should just go straight to memory foam.

And finally, if you have your heart set on a nice comfy feather bed, go for dating that they say is stuffed with clean feathers. Look for the ADFC guarantee on hypoallergenic bedding made of down.

How to Use a Debit Card. Step 1 Lie

How to Use a Debit Card. Step 1 Lie through your Teeth

Remember how in the 70s, you went to stand in line at the tellers counter at your bank so you could withdraw some money? It was only in the 80s that we began to see ATM machines. Every time you opened a bank account, you would get something that looked like a credit card that you could just use on the machine to withdraw money. And then, Visa and MasterCard and all the rest of them began to see that these ATM cards could easily be credit card-like things. And that was how the debit card was born. We all have our debit cards with us. Do we know how to use a debit card to the best effect though? Perhaps not.

For instance, not many people are really aware of how to use a debit card without shooting themselves in the foot? You never to use a debit card to pump gas at a self-service outlet, for instance. The thing is, you go to a gas pump and you swipe your card. Since they don't know how much gas you are going to pump, they try to put a block on as much of your money as they possibly can.

Once you pump gas for, say, $50, they feel they can unblock your money. The problem is that while the block goes on instantly, the unblocking can take three or four days. If you don't want to lose the use of you money for that long, you dont want to use a debit card at the gas pump.

But quite apart from that, for all kinds of other things you should know about how to use a debit card make the most of it.

Let's say that you are the checkout line at the store, and the clerk asks you if you're paying with a debit card or credit card. If you're using a debit card, should you tell them it's a debit card? Actually, the smart way to go about it would be to lie and just say that you are giving them a credit card. Now why on earth would you do this? Well, there arereasons.

Debit cards and credit cards are processed through entirely different networks. Even if you do use a debit card, it can still be processed through a credit card network owned by Visa or MasterCard or something. If you say debit, it'll be processed through regular debit card channels.

Being processed through debit card channels isn't a good thing. If you have a debit card that has a reward program, you only get it when you sign for it. You won't get it when you punch in a PIN number. And then, you'll even get purchase protection just the way you do when you buy through a credit card network. You even save on the one dollar that banks charge you for using your debit card to make purchases.

There's just no reason on earth why you should tell the truth.

How to make Homemade Lotion

Some people love organic stuff. They'll go out and look hard for stuff that's completely green and organic and pay big bucks for those. To some people though, that isn't the ultimate in what you can do for the health of your family and the health of the environment. For that, you have to go a step further and fill your home with homemade products. It's greener because this way, you don't contribute anything to the unnecessary transportation or packaging that already goes on. For instance, let's try to learn how to make homemade lotion now.

This isn't a process this difficult. It's just messy. As you learn how to make homemade lotion, do prepare yourself for the mess involved.

Let's go over the ingredients list you'll need to be prepared with. Get coconut oil or sweet almond oil, pure beeswax, olive oil, pure water, Borax, and essential oils.

Using coconut oil for your homemade lotion can be a great idea for the winter. This is oil that turns solid once the weather becomes even slightly cool. The moment it turns slightly warm, it melts and really sinks into the skin wonderfully. Beeswax is a wonderful emulsifier. It acts as a skin barrier and protects you skin. Olive oil is a good smooth bearer of skin nutrition, and almond oil can make lotion stay on the skin for longer.

Now that weve worked through a nice explanation of our ingredients the way the makers of skin products scream in their advertisements about how their products contain "olive oil to enrich your skin", let's take a closer look at how we put all of this stuff together to make something that's recognizable as lotion.

You need an ounce of beeswax to start with. You can usually get beeswax in granulated form. If you can get this, it'll make your work a lot easier. You need to accurately weigh out 4 ounces each of olive oil, coconut oil, a cup of water and a quarter teaspoonful of Borax.

Your first step would be to throw all of the stuff (except the water and the Borax) together in a glass bowl, place the glass bowl in a pot of boiling water on the stove, and heat away. It'll take the whole thing several minutes of boiling to melt. Now while this is happening, you need to pick up the water, dissolve the Borax well in it, and keep it ready.

Now get a large blender jar, and throwall of the boiling oil in the jar. It would be better if you had a metal blender jar because all of this is going to be quite hot. When you run the blender, the oils will slowly begin to blend. Trickle the water in through the top of the jar as the blender runs and watch as the oil and the water begin to blend into a lotion-like thin white paste.

And then, your lotion is done. The great thing about learning how to make homemade lotion is that even if it gets messy, you just have to rub it all over your arms and legs. It's lotion!

But of course, we need to come to the mattress itself sooner or later. Next on the list of the most important things about how mattresses work that you need to learn about, comes the core mattress. The boxspring is support for the mattress. The mattress is support for you. The mattress core is springs too. These are tightly coiled metal springs made of stiff steel wire.

Every mattress in the store will have some kind of published number for how many springs there are in it. The more there are, the better long-lasting support youll get. If you find a mattress with 400 coils, that may sound like an impressive number. Until you see something with 800 coils.

If you're someone who really enjoys a firm mattress, you basically need to go for as many coils as you can afford. But there are exceptions, of course. Some of the most expensive high-quality mattresses come with no more than 500 coils.

Why are mattress with fewer coils more expensive and better to sleep on than mattresses with lots of the stuff? Coil count isn't the only measure of how firm a mattress is going to be. It also depends on how thick the wire is and how all the springs are joined together

In the Home Birth vs Hospital Birth Debate, Both Sides

In the Home Birth vs Hospital Birth Debate, Both Sides Have Qualities to Recommend Them

When parents see their children all eager to hear time and again the story of how they were born, you can't help but think of how they used to be all eager for the story themselves. It must be a human thing to know the magical story. Well, think about it is there really that much of a story to tell when it's a hospital birth? To begin with, they just put you under a lot of the time. And even if they don't, since the whole birthing process is left to the professionals, there's little detail actually, to provide. Basically, in the home birth vs hospital birth comparison, the home birth has to win out for just sheer storytelling potential.

But in these days of personal financial stress all around, the cost savings has to be a huge deal in the home birth vs hospital birth shoot out. Basically, you do have to admit that for all convenience that hospital birthing affords you, it's hard to afford that when the bill routinely gets to be $15,000. Even when you have a very understanding healthcare insurance provider.

But let's take a look at the home birth vs hospital birth question in a different way so that we can get the big picture. Most people have one kind of idea about how women approach the big day when they actually deliver their babies they look forward to it with dread. That's usually not how it is with home births. Home birth mothers usually report enjoying the experience.

In hospital, there is a constant fear that the doctor will intervene and say that a cesarean section is necessary. Basically, the hospital environment where there are white coats all around making your decisions for you, being completely left you out of the loop can be a stressful thing.

At the hospital, the mother's basic support group consists of the husband and a bunch of masked professionals. At home, there can be friends and midwives who just haven't had their emotions beaten out of them by a professional training. Midwives who are licensed happen to be qualified nurses with master's degrees, usually. There are also friends and family surrounding the mother. There is quite a bit of strong opinion out there today about how we need to return some emotion and humanity back into the medical process. The home birth is usually a good way to do that.

But then, one can't overlook how a home birth isn't the best option at all when there are complications. In certain kinds of births, the baby needs professional care within one minute of being born or else to face health problems for life. And then of course, women who carry the whole burden of running a household on their shoulders just have no break when their birth is at home. Perhaps the best way to go about it would be to choose a happy medium. A birthing center is usually very good idea.

Bringing your Holiday Spending on Gifts under Control

As people write in personal finance columns about people going too far with their holiday spending, they make it sound like it's a kind of selfish self-indulgence. They make it sound like those gifts that people spend money on are stuff they are giving themselves. They should realize that gifts are things people spend money on to give someone else. It shows generosity.

It would show generosity even if it the giver just threw money at the gift without really meaning anything much by it. But even gifts like this light people up. That's just the way people are.

Nevertheless, we really do let things get a bit out of hand when it comes to holiday spending. Somehow, we seem to be only getting in deeper with this whole gift-giving business. In many families, walk into their homes on Easter, and there are gifts everywhere.

It used to be that you would just give each person and family one gift on Christmas.

These days however, each member of the family needs to have at least a half-dozen gifts totaling $150 or $200. Somehow, it just doesn't feel the same to people if they don't have a bunch of gifts. How have we become a nation filled with people who value sheer quantity over thought, love, or just quality? Who wouldn't rather have one $20 gift and have a lot of thought put into it than a $150 gift that was just a box off some top 10 list? Well, anyone could think of a half-dozen people who would go for the expensive gift right away. But that's not the point.

The point is, we've turned into a nation of gift givers who have to give gifts at the drop of a hat throughout the year, for every little excuse from graduation to a baby shower to anything else. And when it comes to holiday spending, we just go crazy. No wonder most of us are in serious debt. We can't go much farther this way. People are going to begin to run away scared from everyone since they know that every single occasion calls for an expensive gift.

Let's try to see how we could spend less these holidays.

When it comes to the big one, Christmas, make sure that your family does a kind of Secret Santa thing. And make sure that your family commits to a pact where everyone agrees on not spending more than, say, $25 on a gift. When it comes to Thanksgiving, a simple pot luck dinner with the family that places emphasis on family and not all the lavishness set on the table, would be in good taste. For Halloween, do your own costume.

Let's not forget what the holidays are about.
