Mobile VoIP is here with us

Today, it seems that VoIP is quickly becoming accepted as the means of communication for businesses and consumers alike. VoIP integration can be seen in most enterprise networks. For those who have not yet made this move, they are planning to do so in the near future. Even companies, like Skype and Vonage, that offer VoIP telephone services have already made this transition and made them mainstream in their line of business.

It is now possible today to have a user-friendly VoIP telephone package at home. VoIP shipments have steadily been increasing in Europe and the mobile VoIP domain seems to have peaked up. While some of these VoIP services are yet to be refined so that they can offer high quality for business use, they are usually considered good enough for consumer use and as a result, we see them being firmly pitched at the consumer so far. While VoIP telephony services have been seen as a cheap alternative by the consumer market, mobile operators on the other hand have seen their voice revenue being offset.

For mobile operators this is a close call and if they do not change their current calling plans, they could lose out to the new mobile VoIP players. Currently, most mobile operators have flat-rate data plans that have the potential of being undermined by VoIP telephone services that continue to become more robust each passing year. However, mobile operators have 2 options that they can take if they are to stay ahead of the curve. They can either block VoIP telephone services on their networks entirely or embrace it as a way to attract and retain subscribers and introduce new revenue streams. Unfortunately, as has been shown by some mobile subscribers, blocking VoIP on networks will result in more losses.

That however does not mean that mobile VoIP telephone services do not have their drawbacks. Many rely on Wi-Fi connections entirely and these are still considered patchy. Furthermore, these tend to tether users geographically while others, by use of both call back technology and VoIP, compromise user experience. The VoIP service that poses the most significant threat is however the one that is relayed over the 3G data network and that provides a true peer-to-peer connection. This requires no Wi-Fi connection, PC or any additional kit. As 3.5G becomes more refined, there is little doubt that VoIP telephone services will become a primary means of communication. Traditional operators will thus have to embrace this trend because one thing is certain: mobile VoIP telephony is here to stay.
