Puzzles

If theres one thing that most kids have in common its a dislike for extra schoolwork at home. It seems that even children attending elementary school are given homework on a fairly regular basis. Its important for them to complete all their lesson plans, but some kids may even need to go a step farther if they want to keep up with their classmates. For parents of children who need a little extra tutoring, a word search puzzle can really help with both spelling and language skills.

Most adults have tried a few of these fun mind benders at some point. Many local newspapers actually have a daily word search puzzle for their readers to attempt. Depending on your skill level a beginner level puzzle may only take you a few minutes to complete, while a puzzle that contains many words all with the same letters, can take upwards of a few hours to get done. The key, when it comes to kids and these fun puzzles, is picking or making some that are at their current grade level.

A really great way to incorporate a childs weekly spelling words into one of these brain twisting puzzles is with a software program that lets a parent create their own puzzles. This may sound a bit daunting but all that is required is that you type in the words you want strategically hidden in the puzzle, you then let the program do all the work for you. Within a few minutes, it will have generated a word search puzzle complete with all the words your child is studying at school.

Some of these software programs are actually available free as downloads online. A quick search should reveal several different sites offering them. Its a good idea to use a quality printer when you print out the completed puzzle so the child wont have any difficulty reading the letters in the word search puzzle.

Gold stars arent just for teachers and you might want to consider using some when your child has completed a puzzle. This is really dependent on their age, as a sixth grader isnt going to find a gold star as fetching as a first or second grader will. Regardless, its always important to praise the child when theyve completed the word search puzzle and maybe even quiz them on how to spell one or two of the words you included.

Finding fun ways to help your child learn essential skills is always important. If you do find that using puzzles to help your little one learn their spelling words, works, share this idea with other moms and dads. Were all looking for innovative and effective ways to help our kids stay on top of the schoolwork game.
