If you've heard of the Atkins Diet, you'll probably find that the South Beach diet is quite similar in appearance. Both kinds of diet come with best-selling diet books, both diets ask you to go on a really tough initial phase where you really deprive yourself, and so on. But there are differences.
The South Beach Diet only asks you to stay away from what it calls unhealthy fats. They make a huge deal of how you have to include healthy fats in your diet. And when it comes to carbs, the South Beach Diet doesn't really care about the absolute quantity of carbs in your food. They are concerned rather with how much sugar there is in the carbs you take in. They say that carbs that come from foods with low amounts of sugar are fine. The Atkins diet doesn't agree with any of this.
But let's take a closer look at the South Beach Diet on its own. The great thing about this diet perhaps the reason it has such a fanatic following is that they don't ask you to starve yourself. Not only do they not ask you deprive yourself, they actually encourage you to snack from time to time snack to a plan. In fact, they pull you up for being careless if you don't snack in the right way.
Even better, on this diet, you don't have to turn into a calorie-counting robot squinting at box labels and weighing and measuring food out to find out how many calories you're going to be consuming. But they do tell you that you're never to eat anything greater than normal-sized portions. On the South Beach Diet, they size portions just large enough to satisfy hunger. You get to eat food for the love of it.
So foods with sugar-rich carbs are not allowed. You don't get to eat rice, potatoes, corn or beets. Nothing with sugar content. And you certainly aren't allowed to snack on candy or desserts.
To start with, the first couple of weeks that you are on the diet happen to be the toughest. You don't get any of the foods prohibited above and you don't even get alcohol or fruit. As for dairy, you get a couple of servings of low-fat or nonfat milk or yogurt, but that's about it.
Once the two weeks are up though, they allow you to bring in a few of the foods that were off the menu you get a little bit of pasta and bread, and vegetables and fruits are allowed too in moderation. You stay this way until you reach the weight level that you have been hoping for. Once that is done, you can get back on whatever diet you like, as long as you don't eat too much.
The diet works because theyve found out that apparently, Americans have a problem with their weight because they are a bit fanatic about their carbs. The diet is entirely about bringing a bit of sanity to the carbs situation in the American diet.
