Considering a Telecommuting Job

What are your feelings when someone tells that they have a telecommuting job? If you're like most people, the feeling is rather close to jealousy. It's funny, but there's a whole legion of people out there who actually dream of the job where they can walk about in their underwear all day, tickle their dog from time to time and put their feet up any time. Well, perhaps a telecommuting job is all that. But it also takes a good deal of preparation and personal discipline. However it is that you choose to work at home as a freelancer or a regular employee you need absolutely to make sure you don't turn into Ray in Everybody Loves Raymond who finds all he does at home is to watch TV and play with the kids.

Often, when you have a telecommuting job with a regular employer, your employer makes it his responsibility to equip your home office adequately. They give you a good computer, Internet access and anything else you may need. They hook you right up. Your responsibility is to set office space aside at home so that you can really feel serious about the job and work with nothing to disturb you. Often, you need space marked off to be your office. Your family needs to know that you want to be disturbed for no reason when you're in there.

You may think, starting out at a telecommuting job, that it has to be pretty easy. What difference does it make, you may find yourself thinking, whether you are at home or at an office? There's work you need to do, and you're going to get it done, you think. But you'll find out that it takes time to learn how to balance personal freedom with work responsibility. In fact, you could find that it will take you a few months to get back to your regular level of productivity.

There are some people who find that a telecommuting job doesn't really suit them because it doesn't give them the social environment that a job does. In short, they hate it that there are no colleagues to talk to. If you're the kind of person who really needs his friends or acquaintances, youll find that such a job arrangement is really not right for you.

And then finally, you may find that there are a few overheads that you need to take care of at any telecommuting job. By overheads, one means the trouble it takes to stay organized, keep abreast of one's taxes, and so on. The good part about the taxes is that you can always claim a home office tax deduction.

If you tend to feel that regular full-time job at the office offers advantages like a finger on the pulse of the modern workplace, well, the telecommuting job is advantages of its own. Your time is your own, there is practically no time or money wasted just getting to the job, and so on. If you aren't someone who really needs the full-time environment to actually stay productive, you really couldn't find a better way to make the best possible use of your life.
