The best thing about this particular tradition is the fact that we all have our own specialty that we like to bring, and we all know what we will get to have each year. When everyone knows they can rely on certain dishes to be a part of our Christmas food tradition, it makes everyone look forward to the pot-luck dinner and it makes the dishes themselves more special as well.
Each year, my wife makes a chicken casserole dish that has cheese, chili peppers and tortilla chips, among other things. This has become a staple of our Christmas food tradition because everyone really looks forward to this casserole. It is always one of the main courses, and my wife, along with two of the other women, are charged with providing their specialties each year.
One of my favorites side dishes is one that is sort of a green bean and bacon combination that also includes some type of a sauce. I can't ever remember the name of the dish, but the fact that my cousin uses fresh green beans makes all of the difference, and it, too, has become a signature side dish in our Christmas food tradition every December 24.
Another part of our annual Christmas food traditions is chili and tamales. We have these as one of our main courses at the celebration and it is always a favorite. This takes a Texas specialty in chili and one of the favorite foods in Texas in tamales and combines the two into one dish. I know that it is one of the things to which I look forward the most each year, and many of the other family members feel the same way.
Probably the favorite part of our Christmas food tradition is desert, which always includes a cherry cobbler, a blueberry strudel and a couple of cakes and pies. This is something to which everyone looks forward each year.
Our Christmas food tradition is very important for a couple of reasons to my family. There are all kinds of great foods to sample, we always have a lot of laughs, and probably most important of all is the fact that we are all together. Combining those three things always makes for a wonderful holiday experience!
