Could You Get Clothes for Free? Maybe If You Were into Wardrobing, you Could

Clothes for free, you say? Surely you know that there's no such thing as a free... you know how the saying goes. However, there is such a thing as free when you're willing to bend the rules a little bit and be borderline dishonest. Look at it this way if this was really a bad thing to do, would there be an actual regular name for it (thats how you are supposed to salve your conscience)? They call it wardrobing.

Yes, that's a remarkably decent name for what goes on. Wardrobing is where you go into a store, pick up high-end clothes like you're actually going to buy them, and then you actually pay for them and buy them. However, you take them home, you wear them for a short time say to college one day or to a party or something and then you bring it back home, fold it nice and neat like it's never been touched. And then you return it at the store for a full refund like you just changed your mind. And everyone's just going to keep wondering how you have such a great wardrobe. If only they knew.

Actually, people take advantage of this kind of store returns policy for all kinds of things not just for clothes. Anything that stores have liberal returns policies on, they have a great time there. They just go and borrow those things, use them little bit and then return them for a full refund.

Is this really a harmless kind of activity a victimless crime? Well, supporting this kind of activity does cost retailers a lot of money. And that means higher prices for the rest of us who actually pay. And that's especially true now, now that the economy is kind of limping along and lots of people are looking for ways to get clothes for free (and everything else either for free or for a very little money). And of course, the customer who actually pays for new stuff he doesn't know that he's getting used stuff at full price.

Retailers are responding by turning really strict about their returns policies. Of course this turns out to be a great inconvenience to people who really do return things sometimes for honest reasons. But more importantly, going wardrobing so you can get clothes for free is illegal. It may be hard to prove that a person is a wardrober, but if there were a way, there is a law that treats it as an offense.

Perhaps people who want clothes and don't have the means to pay for them, can just go with less illegal means instead. They could go to clothing swapping websites for instance, or they could get daily deals from group buying websites like Gilt for low prices on high-quality fashion. Or they could buy used.

Basically, our system of retail is the envy of the world. In other countries, they can't believe that in America, you can just return stuff and the stores trust you. We wouldn't want to ruin it, now would we?
