There is a scene in Everybody Loves Raymond where Raymond and his brother Robert discover that their mother used to add a shot of alcohol of some kind to their nighttime milk to get them to sleep on time. That's some baby sleep training.
Well, that of course is completely unconscionable. But there are other things you want to be careful about. The first thing you want to do in your search for baby sleep training methods is to stay away from professionally-developed techniques. There are all these parenting books out there that that try to push these methods that do nothing very imaginative when they merely try to rework the old cry-it-out method into something slightly different.
Some methods that involve technology try to vibrate your babys crib, or they try to rock them all in pursuit of somehow knocking your baby out for the night. Before you do anything like this, try to ask your conscience if it feels fair or right.
Just think of it this way how hard would it be for you to change your sleep cycle? You actually want to do it. Your baby has no idea what you're trying to do to her when you try every trick in the book on her. One good way of dealing with the problem of when your baby sleeps would be to actually not indulge in any baby sleep training at all, but instead to just sleep when she does. Since you really want to just be done with the whole baby sleep problem, you're far more motivated than she is to sleep whenever it's convenient.
So maybe you should be concerned about mother-sleep-training rather than sleep training for the baby.
When you hear about those books and techniques that push baby sleep training, right away, they sound so convincing. But it's shortsighted thinking though. You just end up forcing your baby into some kind of mold that doesn't work for her and that historically never has for as long as babies have existed. When you give up your own personal intuition to trust in some "training technique", your baby senses this. And she just loses faith in your parenting ability. This is the last thing you want to see happen. When you trust your own judgment, follow your own eye for those little biological cues that are everywhere, it builds a bond with your baby.
If you absolutely have to trust in a baby sleep training method, make sure that you dont do it for the first eight months especially, silly methods like the cry-it-out one. This method for instance, will make your baby completely lose faith in how you're there for her. And while you exhaust your patience with this method that doesn't work, you'll be putting off finding the real reason why baby wont sleep.
