Of course, they aren't the first one to think up this idea in the play structure. If you look at any playground, usually there are elements of slide and hide incorporated in it. Almost every playground will have a slide, and most of them will have a low platform under which the children can hide if they want to. The great thing about having a hiding place for kids is that it gives them a mini world that is all their own. They can play games of make believe, try on independence, and feel like they have a little bit of privacy, all well within line of sight of their parents. This is really a great solution for both parents and children.
When I have the chance, I take my kids out of the playground where they can slide and hide to their heart's content on the great play structures they have there. Unfortunately, sometimes time constraints prevent this. When that happens, it is great for them to have the slide and hide to play on. It fits in the living room quite comfortably, and although it is not as much of a thrill as the playground, it means they can safely play while I watch over them inside the house. It's a great solution for rainy days too.
The best thing about the slide and hide is that it helps keep your house tidy. Before I got my kids a playhouse, they loved to make forts. It was almost an obsession with them. They would constantly be borrowing kitchen chairs, taking their blankets and pillows, and making elaborate structures they could climb around in. Even though they still like to make forts, with slide and hides they are less intractable. If I tell them not to make a mess, they will listen to me and play in the Playhouse instead. It keeps my living room clean and keep them entertained!
